Acarya Hrdayam
of
Alagiya Manavalap Perumal Nayanar

The following "Bird's eye view" is an extract from an
English version of the above classical work by
B.S.S. Iyengar of Bangalore. As he has stated in the book,
no study of Tiruvaymoli is complete without a study of
Acarya Hrdayam.

The aim of Acarya Hrdayam is to bring out the greatness of
Tiruvaymoli, the impeccable personality of Nammalwar and the
special features in Tiruvaymoli under the following points.

1. Preface - The compassionate sovereign Lord bestowed the
scriptures for the ignorant people of the world in order
to give them the power of discretion between good and bad
(Curnikas 1-15).

2. He gave out the Tirumantra as the essence of all the
scriptures for Him to be realised by the people with this
power of discretion (Curnikai 16).

3. The distinguishing features of the vedic scriptures and
their essence, the Tirumantra, as also of their respective
proponents (Curnikais 17-38).

4. The uniqueness of Tiruvaymoli (Curnikais 39-74).

5. The personality of Nammalvar (Curnikais 75-93).

6. The blossoming of the devotional knowledge of Nammalvar
as a result of the Lord's special grace (Curnikais 94-117).

7. When Alvar speaks with wisdom, his words are his own and
when he speaks with devotion, his words are those of a female
(Curnikais 118-121).

8. While speaking like a female, he has similarities with the
Lord's own spouses and other persons close to the Lord
(Curnikais 112-132).

9. The esoteric meanings of Alvar's utterances in the female
mode (Curnikais 133-158).

10.The distinguishing characteristics of the Lord in arca in
each of the holy places which Nammalvar has eulogized in
Tiruvaymoli in the devotional mode (Curnikais 159-186).

11. Tiruvaymoli was indited by Alvar with deep devotion
arising from his love towards the Lord experienced by him
in arca form as in item 10 (Curnikais 187,188).

12. How Tiruvaymoli is in accord with Bhagavadgita and how
it excels Gita even (Curnikais 189-194).

13. The exclusive features taught in Tiruvaymoli together
with their implications, the people who are to be benifitted
by them, the reasons why he addresses even ineligible
people, and, how Tiruvaymoli, indited purely as a service
offering to the Lord without expecting any reward or praise,
has benefitted the people (Curnikais 195-207).

14. Tiruvaymoli contains the meanings of the three Rahasyas,
namely, Tirumantra, Dvaya and Carama Sloka, as also the
knowledge of the "arthapancaka" contained in the three
rahasyas, both in brief and in detail (Curnikais 208-212).

15. Tiruvaymoli contains benediction, salutation and subject
matter mentioned in the opening stanza as per convention,
even unintentionally (Curnikai 213).

16. Tiruvaymoli has the same salutary effects with its ten
Centums as the Lord who came down in these worlds in ten
Avataras (Curnikai 214).

17. The intention of the Alvar mentioning in the end pacuram
of each Decad, the Decad, Centum and the whole Tiruvaymoli
(Curnikai 215).

18. Each Centum contains a Decad in the form of advice to
people on the relevant subject of the Centum illustrated with
examples, many of them advising people to resort to the Lord
and some advising them to resort to his devotees as a
corollary (Curnikais 216, 217).

19. States briefly the ten qualities of the Lord, one in
each Centum, contained in the ten Centums of the
Tiruvaymoli together with the ten stages of spiritual
growth of Nammalvar (Curnikai 218).

20. Summary of each of the ten Centums (Curnikais 219-228).

21. The probable reasons why the Lord kept Alvar, who had
realised the futility in these worlds and developed
detachment, in these worlds for so long (Curnikai 229).

22. Pointing out with illustrations, the dividing lines
in Tiruvaymoli of the progressive growths of Parabhakti,
Parajnana and Paramabhakti in Alvar (Curnikais 230-233).

23. Concluding remark that only "the unsolicited grace
of the Lord in the company of Lakshmi that can grant
Moksa" is the only central idea contained in Tiruvaymoli
(Curnikai 234).

Thanks
Srinivasan Sriram
