dear shri balaji/shri ramachandran, Japa with count is infinitely better than one without count.Quoting the NAradIya ashtAkshara Brahma vidya, Srimad Azhagiasingar says that the former is a thousand times more effective than the latter-"asankhyAt tu sankyAta: sahara guNa uchyatE". adiyen seems to have read elsewhere too that the asuras steal the fruits of a japa without count. further, the Saccharitra SudhAnidhi, an exhaustive compendium on rituals, prohibits japa without enumeration- " apavitra kara:sankhyAm akurvan anya mAnasa: Japa hOmAdikam karma anuttareeyascha varjayEt" A few other activities to be avoided during Japam are- uttering the mantra loud enough for others to hear, laughing, exhibiting anger, displeasure, etc.,rubbing one itching foot with the other, walking or leaning on the wall or other things for support, letting our attention wander to worldly matters, yawning, sneezing, performing japam without pavitram, uttareeyam (upper cloth) etc. Conversation should be avoided during japam-if it is inevitable, then the japam has to be resumed after reciting the Vishnu sookta mantra "idam VishNur vichakaramE....". There are many other stipulations too in this regard. regards, dasan, sadagopan. dasan, sadagopan. For this can we do an Open Sankalpam where no count is mentioned so that Japa can be done as long as we are able to concentrate. I am a Rig Vedin and I have been traditionally used to say 'Yatha sakti gayatri mantrasca japam karisisye...'. Can you quote the line where we could mention the number? I am interested in knowing it please. Kind Regards, AR > The question raised by Sh mukundan is true in my case also. PLEASE HELP & ADVISE! _/|\_ Hare Krishna & Vanakkam dear Vaishnavas, please advise me in my present situation. My sister in law gave birth yesterday to a beautifull girl. We are all happy and feel blessed to have received a new Lakshmi in our Family. My problem is that my parents said according our Eelam Hindu Tamil customs i can not do Abisheka etc. to the Deities in our House for 31 days.I follow a mixture of Gaudiya Vaishnavam and Sri Vaishnava belief. I do on Fridaya a special puja with mantras,Abishek, fire yajna for our House Deities Perumal(Vishnu)with Sridevi Bhudevi and Lakshmi, i say Narasimha & Narayana kavacam and Stotrams. According to the ISKCON they ´ve advised me to continue with my normal puja showing arati, ringing bells, lighting incense sticks, singing songs, offering flowers etc. to Krishna and Narasimha, however i was also advised that to certain Deities i shall not conduct a special Puja where certain Mantras are used. I will continue with my normal Puja but would love to do a very special puja with Abishek & fire yajna on this Weekend to my Home Deities Perumal with Sridevi Bhudevi and also Ganesh Statue. The Deities size are like the ones in a any Hindu Temple, they ´ve a seperate big room wich is only used as a puja room. I am quite confused about the Deity service, please all my dear loved Vaishnavas please advise me, if the deity workship can continue also for the next 31 days. Many Many Thanks for you replies in advance. Hare Krishna, Jai Sriman Narayana Murthi ki JAI adiyen Rangan ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Your use of Yahoo!
