SrI:
SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya nama:

Dearest all,
There has been lot of encouraging emails on adiyEn?s
daring venture. With ananthakOti praNamams at
acharyan?s lotus feet, let us continue to enjoy this
series.

What is the purpose of our lives? What is the reason
for our birth?
In what way do we behave better than animals and
birds?
They also eat, sleep and mate? what is that we do
better as humans?
Is there any reasoning ? or what are we trying to
achieve? The list of queries is endless.
The more intelligent we are [ if we think we are], the
list of queries will be longer. If we simply vegetate
just like mere beings [and not human beings], and do
not worry about what is life-after? I just want to be
happy, enjoy as long as I am here... fine... then
there is no reason for our human birth..
Ask yourself:-Why am I suffering through the process
of birth, old age, disease and death?"; "What is
death?"; "What is the relationship between myself and
God?"; who am I? what is the reason for my birth as
what I am...etc..etc.

It is very natural for every sane person to come out
with such soul searching queries. These are very
important queries which will ultitamely lead to get to
know the actual realities. That is how one gets the
discrimination powers [vivEkam] and begins to do all
that will elevate him to higher realms. Religion
satisfies the deep inward craving in man who is not
always content with leading merely an animal existence
and wants spiritual consolation, solace and peace. The
word Religion comes from the Latin word religio which
consists of two words, viz., re (back) and ligare (to
bring or bind). That which binds the soul back to God
is religion

There are lots and lots of lives on this earth. Human
beings, Animals, birds, insects, trees, plants,
creepers, etc., etc., - there are so many varieties of
lives living in this world. Every day- every minute,
there are so many births of such lives and so are
deaths. After taking so many lives (they say about
8,400,000 lives), we have come to this human life.
Avvayaar, The Tamil poet, says : "aridhu aridhu
maanidaraayp piRatthal aridhu"- It is extremely rare
and precious to be born of human being. It is quite
true that it is our fortune to be born a human being
with the capacity of sixth sense. Let us make use of
it for our upliftment further. What is good and bad-
what to do and what not to do- only human beings are
blessed with such discriminating capabilities- We have
been given that capacity by Emperumaan. We have been
blessed with that vivEkam. Shall we not make full use
of it? - How?

The fact is that, every one of is a spiritual entity
and all of us are eternally subservient to the Supreme
Lord. Due to the karmA (good and bad activities), we
take varieties of bodies like dogs, bees, devas,
plants, birds, human being etc. Indeed, it is
extremely rare to be blessed as a human being and get
a human body.

Our religion and our Sampradayam is enriched with the
unambiguous and peerless philosophy and this has been
based, propounded, established, and built with solid
foundations and huge ramparts that no external factor
can even influence or destroy it. Unfortunately the
residents themselves [i.e. we] do not understand the
beauty or appreciate the inner depths of our
structure.
How do we get to know?- Only through teachers-
spiritual teachers- acharyas.

Not some acharyas who declare themselves as one or
those self styled ones; sometimes they even declare
themselves as Gods. But the Acharyas who have been
following the strictest adherence to the saasthrAs,
the scriptures and are well versed in jnAnam; who are
resplendent with vairAgya, anushtAnams? they are the
ones who can lift us.. If they themselves are not
clear, it would be one blind leading other blinds.

Thus we do not have to look for or reinvent the wheel.
All answers for all our queries that had come to our
mind, will come in the future by all future
generations are all already answered by our religion.
The answers are all available as revealed or unearthed
by the sages, rishis, azhwars, acharyas? There is no
dearth. But they are all not so easily understandable.
Hence we need acharyas to explain in simple terms for
us. The role of an AchArya in guiding a human being
towards salvation can hardly be exaggerated. Chandogya
Upanishad, Kashyapa samhitha and many other works
emphasize AchArya?s part in shaping a disciple and his
future. The term AchArya implies: one who acquires
philosophic knowledge (jnAnam) by the proper study of
saashthrAs; by imparting such jnAnam that He had
acquired to His disciples makes them adopt the
religious life fully in accordance with or as laid
down by saashthrAs; and one who follows the saasthrAs
himself.

Yaangnyavalkya smruthi says:

AchinOthi cha saasthrArthAn AchArE sthApayathyapi;
Swayam AcharathE yasmAth thasmAth AchArya uchyathE

AchAryan should not only practice what he preaches; He
also makes sure that his sishyas too practice what he
teaches. Our AchArya lineage does not end or begin
some time or other in the past. It traces back to
Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan. It is not a thAnthOnRi
(self styled) lineage. It does not utter any statement
an iota away from Vedic hymns. It is the most accurate

interpretation of Vedas, which does not violate any
Vedic statement. It is the one firmly propounded by
Bhagavath Ramanuja and expounded by Swamy Desikan.

One such magnificent most compassionate and most
merciful acharya is His Holiness Sri Gopaladesika
Mahadesikan. Let me place my head again and again at
the lotus feet of asmadhAcharyan His Holiness Srimad
PaRavakkOttai Andavan Sri Gopaladesika Mahadesikan
Swami?
