SrI:
SrImathE Gopaladesika mahadesikaya nama:

Dearest all,

asmadhAchAryan His Holiness Srimad PaRavakkOttai
Andavan Sri Gopaladesika Mahadesikan swami will be
completing his 25 years in sanyAsa Ashramam by March
2007. Swami is verily like the Sage Vaishta himself.
He is YathirAjar- the king among ascetics. Erudite
scholars, other acharyas have praised Swami on many
occasions for His jnAna, bhakti vairAgya, anushtAnam
and more on His unbounded mercy on the sishyas and
abhimaanis.

It is adiyEn?s rash and daring attempt again to lick
the Ganges waters to get myself purified? to post a
page everyday for next 108 days [till mar 2007] on
Acharya vaibhavam..to commemorate this milestone of 25
years of sanyAsa ashramam. I pray with all sincerity
to the Lotus Feet of Dhivya Dampathi to bless this
kaimkaryam, and only with Their blessings, acharya
anugraham and bhAgawathAs' wishes, they can be made
palatable and all errors and mistaks are entirely due
to adiyEn's lack of or no jnAnam.

adiyEn mainly intends this more as an introductory
series for beginners like me to get to know
Srivaishnavam, the glories of our acharyas and the why
and how of Srivaishnavam as far as possible.

I am not doing or writing anything new. I will be
basically reproducing the wonderful articles, write
ups already made by erudite scholars. It will be more
of a compilation.

It is said in GitA:
tad viddhi pranipatena pari prasnena sevyaya
upadekshyanti tE jnAnam jnAninah tattva darshinah

One should fall at the feet of the gurus, serve them,
and ask questions at appropriate times again and
again, to know spiritual knowledge; those seers of
truth will teach you that divine spiritual knowledge.

The word Guru means one who removes ignorance
(agnjAnam) of spiritual knowledge. In Prapanna
pArijAtham by SrI NadAdhoor AmmAL Guru is described
very beautifully:

A great Guru should be sought after by a person
(disciple), immersed in samsaaric afflictions; who is
afraid of the transitory life; the sorrows due to
internal and external factors (AdhyAthmikam- soul
dependent; Adhiboudhikam- external world dependent;
and Adhideivikam- pertaining to Supreme Lord). The
three types of problems that we encounter are
-tApatrayam-(AdhyAtmikam, Adi bhoutikam, Adi
daivikam).

AdhyAtmikam - belonging to to the individual, such as
headache, cold, anger, desire, fear, etc.
Adhibhaudhikam --those resulting from other bhUta-
such as the birds, animals, other people etc., and
Adhidaivikam - those resulting from devatA-s such as
from the wind, sun, rain, etc.

Guru teaches and initiates the disciple with the
necessary manthrAs and impart jnAnam to get to know
the swaroopam, the eternal relationship with the
Almighty and the way to attain Him along with the
knowledge of the hurdles on the way.

This Guru is the Supreme Highest; he is verily Brahman
(Lord); He is the highest of highs; He is the highest
desire; He is the Highest God Himself. Guru is the
Ultimate wealth; Guru is the knowledge; Guru is our
treasure; Guru himself is means; Guru is the end. He
needs to be worshipped at all times, under all
circumstances; His name shall always be uttered by the
disciple at all times.

Chapter 4- Guru
paddhathi)

Swami Sri U Ve Dr NS Anantharangachar Swami mentions
as follows:

It is no exaggeration to say that there is nothing on
earth by paying which, we could free ourselves from
our indebtedness to a Guru. The benefaction bestowed
by the Guru is so great that we have to be ever
grateful to him. A number of teachers have taught us
different things and have given a shape to our life.
We have to grateful to all of them.

An Aachaarya is celebrated personage who is a SROTRIYA
and a BRAHMANISHTA. Without initiation by an
Aachaarya, it is not possible for one to gain the
knowledge of the ultimate reality.

Sri Vedanta Desika declares that there is no God
greater than the Aachaarya himself- 'Aachaaryaita
Devatam Samadhikam Anyam Na Manyaamahe'

The Guru shows the path of knowledge, fills one with
faith by his own example, initiates the procedure,
plans for his progress, gives him the necessary
technique, corrects him whenever he goes wrong and
leads him to the ultimate goal surely and safely.

The Mundaka Upanishad says that one who has developed
dispassion on seeing the hollowness of the earthly
gains should go to such a Guru alone who is a Srotriya
and Brahmanishta for gaining knowledge of the Supreme
reality.

The Guru to be sought should be endowed with the
following qualities.
i)  he must have gained realization;
ii) he must be of a firm understanding,
iii)sinless,
iv) well versed in the scriptures,
v) established in Brahman,
vi) Satvic in nature,
vii)truthful,
viii) endowed with virtuous behavior,
ix) free from jealousy, vanity and other vices,
x) endowed conquest over his sense organs,
xi) forgiving,
xii) compassionate,
xiii) corrective whenever there is a lapse and
xiv) mindful of his and other' welfare.

The Prakritam Aachaarya ,Sri Paravaakkottai Aandavan
Swami fulfills everyone of these parameters admirably
well and is truly a Srotriya and Brahmanishta fit to
be worshipped as God himself as ordained by Taittriya
Upanishad-' Aachaarya Devo Bhava' and as voiced by
Apasthamaba-'Devamiva Aachaaryam Upaaseetha"
