Subject: HOW AZWARS HAVE ENJOYED VARIOUS RIVERS.

Dear Bagawadas,

Adiyen would lilke to give a small write up of the Azwars aubhavam of various Great Rivers.

THE GANGES:
Thirumangai Mannan in his Periathrumozhi 1.4 decad (EnamunAgi) explains about Lord Badrinarayanan who is "SWAYAMBU"
and how great The Ganges is because of the presence of Lord Himself.

The same Thirmangai Mannan in his Periathirumadal Pasuram 33 gives importance to The Ganges which is as  follows:
"PoonGangai munnam punalparaKum nalNadan, miNadum konavillum Neelvel GuruKal kulamadalai
thannigaronDrillatha vendithanaJaayanai"

Poothathazwar in his Irandam Thiruvanthathi Pasuram 78 explains as to how Shiva got rid of his Brahamahathi Dosham by washing
Lord Narayana's Lotus Feet.

thavamsaithu NanmugaNe petran  tharani
nivanDalalppa Neetia PorpaDam  sivanDanthathan
kaianaythum ArakazuvinAn  GangaiNeer
peithani Permozinthapin.

The same story has been explained by Thirumazichaipiran in his NanMugan Thiruvandathi, Pasuram 9 as:

kuraikondu NanMugan kunDiGai Neerpaithu
maraiKonda mandirathal Vazthi - karaiKonda
kanDathan sennimelerakazuvinan
anDathan Sevadiyei Yangu

Periazwar in his Periarvazwar Thirumozhi Pasuram 3.10.4. explains the importance of The Ganges through Anjineyar.

When Anjineyar meets SEETHAPIRATTI in Lanka he explains her about the first meeting of Gugan in the Ganges.

Varanitha mulaimadaVai, VaiDevi   viNappam
Theranintha ayodiarKon perunDevi   KeTaruLai
KuraNintha Velvalavan Guganodum Gangaithannil
SEraninDa thozamai konDathum Or aDayalam.

In another Pasuram 4.9.5 which is like this:

Amayay Gangayay AzkaDalai avaniyai aruvaraiGalai
NanmuGanai NanMarayai Velviyay thakaNayai ThanumaNan

YAMUNA:

aNDAl in her 5th Pasuram of Thirupavai calls Krishna as:

MAyanai maNu vaDa maDurai Mainthanai
ThuyA PeruNeer Yamunai thuraivanai

As she enjoys the Leela's of Kannan she has soft corner for Yamuna River also through the above Pasuram.

Thirumangai Mannan in his Periaya Thirumozhi Pasuram 10.7.9 mentions about Yamuna which is very interesting:

Edumvaliumudia InnamBi piranDa ezuthinGalil
Edalar kaNiyananai vaLarthi Yamunai Neeradaponen
sedan ThiruMaruMarBan kiDanthu thiruvaDiyal  Malaipol
Odum saGadathai saDiyapinnai urapuvathu anJuvane

It is a discussion Yasoda had with her friends when she goes for bath in Yamunai about the Leelas of Kannan and at that time Kannan was
only 7 months old.

Now let us see how Azwars enjoyed Poigai River.

anDal in her Nachiar Thirumozhi Pasuram 3.2 mentions:

idu en pugunthathu ingu anDo  Ippoigaiku eVaru vanthai
MaDuvin thuzai mudi Maley Mayane enGalamuDe
viDiynmayal aDu Mattom vithaGa Pillai virayel
kuDikonDu aravil naDithai kurinDidai Kuraipaniyay

Finally we will come to Cavery River and what Azwars feel about this:

Thondaradipodiazwar in his Thirumalai in Pasuram 23 is very happy to mention that Cavery is better than Ganges. Let us see:

Gangien punithamaya Cavery naduvu pattu
pongunEr paranDu payum PoomBozil arangamthaNul
enGalmal iraivan Esan kiDanthThor kiDakaikanDum
enGanam maranDu vazKen Ezien Eziene

He feels that Lord Rangantha sleeps in the River bed and so Cavery is better.

Ganges has a minus point as Shiva has washed Lords Feet to over come his Bramahathi Dosham .

In the same way according to Peria Thirumadal Pasuram 33, Arjunan while he was going for Theertha Yathirai  and bathing in the Ganges he meets a beautiful girl named Ulubi.
She forces him to have sex with her and when he refuses, she threatens that she will die if he does not agree and ultimately gives her a baby boy. This can be seen from Mahabaratha Athiparvadam, 238 chapter.

Of course no river is considered bad as Lord Narayana is in all the rivers. This will be clear from one Pasuram of Thiruvoimozhi 2.1.5

Uzhi Thoruzhi Ulagukku Neer kondu
thoziyarum yamum pol Neerai nehizkindra
vazia Vaname Neeum MadusooDan
Pazimil pattu avankaN pAsathal naivae

According to Padmashri Sampath Kumar who is writing on Divya Desam, adiyen could notice that SRI RAMA is supposed to have taken
bath in one of the river to purify himself of the sins of having killed Ravana. The holy place is "Naimisaranyam"

Ultimately in Thiruvoimozi 5.6 decade (kadal Janam ) the Azwar says that Narayana is in 'EVERYTHING' and river is no exception. This is supported by Pasuram 4.9.5 of Periazwar Thirumozhi which clearly says that HE is " Amayay Gangaiay AzkaDalai  aVaniyay  aruvaraiGalai
NanMuganai  Nan Maraiyai  Velviyai thakkNaiai  ThanumaNan".

Ultimately we can be rest assured that any water is purified by   mentioning HIS name as HE  is Antharyami .

adiyen,
nochalur seshadri sampath.
