Respected Shri Sukumar :

The Venerable Vysya has in one of his works on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras
has given 4 stages of upward progress when a person undertakes the path of
Yoga. These are called "Bhavas". A Bhava simply means 'an attitude'. It
is a mental image one cultivates and functions out of this.

For example, when you are at home typically on a Sunday you do not think
about the office. You are relaxed and concerned about your Sunday chores,
relaxation or playing with children etc. At the same time during office
hours in the midst of a meeting you do not think about the cricket match or
quiz which your son is participating in. If you do then you will fail in
the meeting. So there is an appropriate time/place for everything. In
the good old days when Vedic knowledge was given supreme importance, the
Gurukala system was initiated. The small boy of 7 after upanayanam was
supposed to first only LISTEN and REPEAT by rote the Vedic words from his
Guru for close to 5/6 years, then ,for the next 3/4 years supposed to
practice cross-repeation i.e. repeat with various combinations eg. Sa re ga
ma pa da ne sa, sasa rere gaga mama papa...then sare gama pada nesa....then
sarega mapada...then saregaga mamapada....
in such extremely complex ways he was supposed to chant...then once crossed
20 or so he learnt the grammer/meanings..after 25 or so he was supposed to
ponder and study and work on the inner meanings...
Mind you all these times he continued with his original chanting day in and
day out. No respite. No excuse.

Of course, he would continue with his Sandhya also without break and this
would be done AFTER the Sandhya.

The point you must note is the first few years he learns by listening and
blind repeatition. He just has to comply in order for the sound waves to
permeate into his skin, go through his cell walls, worm itself into his
genes and ultimately etch themselves into his chromosomes and brain cells.

This stage is called Dharma Bhav. i.e.just doing it, blindly without reason
without pause, without expectation, without explanation, without knowing
the meanings, without questioning, without thinking, without interpreting.

When a thing is done in this manner, then the next stage occurs naturally
i.e.Jyana Bhav i.e. the stage of Knowledge, when knowledge dawns naturally.
This knowledge is the knowledge of what is right what is wrong and the
difference.

Once this Jyanan Bhav continues, the next stage occurs spontaneously i.e.
Vairagya Bhav i.e. a sense of detachment. You slowly begin to detach
yourself with various attachments including attachment to knowledge Note
that this Vairagya happens because of knowledge or Jyana Bhav.

The last and final stage dawns once the other three Bhavas are sustained on
a long term basis i.e.Aiswarya Bhav or the attitude of wealth. Inner
Wealth. Power. Extraordinary capabilities. Benefits, fruits. You start
reaping the benefits. The benefits are better health, better relationships,
birds might not be afraid of you - a sparrow will not fly away when you
approach, fearlessness, a capacity and personality when people trust you
blindly, you are able to give prompt and CORRECT decisions, your actions are
without flaw.

This last stage is one of the most dangerous stages full of pitfalls
because when the person starts tasting the benefits, there is a slight
chance 0.0001% that his ego and knowledge still dominates and this will
make him crave for these benefits. The moment he does these he has already
lost his previous stage i.e. Vairgarya Bhav where he has been giving up
things. In that very instant he also loses his Jyana Bhav because whatever
knowledge he had which made him detached also has been dropped and rendered
useless.

He just remains with Dharma Bhav i.e. the primary original stage. This
stage is never extinguished. It prevails always. Therefore he has to go back
to kinter garten and study ABCD once more. After one more or a few cycles
more he may ultimately Graduate into Vaikuntam

You must note that if nothing is possible, stick to the inevitable,
invariable choiceless action i.e. Dharma.

Coming to your specific case since you are INWARDLY conscious and your
conscious is pricking that itself is enough. You are already in Jyana
Bhav. By maintaining your Dharma you have gained knowledge and hence your
email to this writer to resolve your inner doubt. The detailed procedures
are not relevant. Just offering the Prayaschitam argyam is enough.
Especially, after the main argyam (morning thrice), take water once more
and while offering to the Sun etc. just utter "Kala teetha Prayaschita
Argya Pradanam Karishe" and holding the water utter without breathing the
Gayathri and offer Argyam. While Uttering the Gayathri, imagine and look at
the water inside the cup of your palms softly and imagine transferring your
Prana into these waters. The feeling must be from the pit of your stomach
i.e. below your naval. It must come from your heart, traverse into the pit
of your stomach and channelise your entire thought into the water.

Morning and afternoon prayers may be joined but do them distinctly and
separtely one after the other. The attitude, or Bhava is important and in
your case this seems to be well established. Enclosed please find a
write-up on Bhava which this writer presented to the Bombay University. It
might be perhaps provide some clues hopefully. Read between the lines and
understand clearly point 12, which is the most important essence of the
entire essay

God bless you. You are one step ahead of this writer who is unable to do
Madhyanikam. Thanks for reminding. This writer will do the Madhyanikam on
Sundays and holidays. You have opened this writer's eyes.

Sri Krishnaya Namah!

Humble Pranams to Sri Sadagopan & Sri Ramachandran!

Many thanks for the eye opening information on Sandhyavandanam and the
significance of Vedas. I have few concerns which are out of limitations
that this loukika jeevana has posed me. I know it is dharma and it should
be followed (just followed), but there are some exceptions and here are
they --

1. I am doing the pratha sandhyavandanam with prayaschitam (for delay).
The book that I bought recently from TSK Sabha mentions that in case we
are not able to do it on time, we can do it on the specified time,
wherever we are thru our mind - a kind of manasa sandhyavandana. It is
said that in Mahabharatha too, during the battle, various warriors offer
mud as argya to Sun when water is unavlbl, during the specified time.
Please let me know whether we can do manasa sandhyavandanam in case of
exceptions, with procedure, if any.

2. Also, in the book, there is a mention of joining both pratha & madhya
mika sandhyavandanam (Alas! the procedure is not dealt with in it).

I realise the importance of Madhyamika sandhyavandanam, during my stay in
house during Sundays and holidays. When I do - pratha / madhya / sayam
sandhyavandanams on any particular day, the mind gets a diff. feeling -
calmer, finer feelings. It is as if, it can withstand any turmoil/danger.
Suddenly the mind becomes strong. That too, the japa( gayathri,
ashtakara) being in Padmasana, really transforms me and gives energy.
After Sandhyavandanam, I used to chant Purusha Suktha, and
Narayanopanishath (little extracts from all vedas, glorifying Lord
Srimannarayana) wherein it is said that chanting Narayanopanishath during
madhyana (mid day) absolves us from pancha mahapathakas, highest effect
when compared to morning/evening. Somehow I will be in office during
midday and hence, am thinking whether I can join it with pratha kala
sandhyavandanam. Please let me know in case any procedure is set for this.

3. While exceptions should not become the order, many times it so happen
that I offer addl. argya as prayaschitam. While I deeply feel bad about
myself for my inadequacies - be it unwell/late nights etc., I wanted to
know is there any means of appeasing Lord for these shortcomings other than
a polite - RETIRE FROM JOB.

Sukumar

Sri Krishnaparabrahmane Namah!
