Thiruthanka

This kshetra is described in brahmandapurana. Brahma conduted a yagna without the presence of his consort saraswati, Angry at being ignored with the help of asuras made the world dark by removing the glow out of chandran and Suriyan. At brahma?s plea paramatma came to thiruthaka on Chitirai swati naal as Deepaprakasar and saved the yagna. But saraswati continued to create trouble to the yagna, created a asura in the form of fireball to destroy yagna. But the Lord held the fireball in his hand and lit the yagna salai. Hence lord is called by the name Deepaprakasar.

Then saraswati regretted her act and became saraswati theertham to cool the hands of lord holding the deepam. As this kshetra was surrounded by cool orchads it is called thanka [Than ? cool, Ka ? orchads]

This is the ava thara sthalam of our swami. The Swami?s sannidhi faces south and in the prakara we can see the life history paintings of our swami. The swami?s vigraha in Gnana Mudra was consecrared by swami kumarar Nainacharaya. Swami?s Nithya Aradhana Perumal Sri Hyagriva is also in the sannidhi. We can see the wonderfull event in this sannidhi during salai kinaru uthsavam when Swami Bhasyakarar and Lord varadarajan come to the sanndhi to show Love and affection to our swami. We can even see that our swami sits virtually on the floor when bhasyakarar sits on the pallaku and Lord varadaraja sits in the mandapam in front of swami desikan sannidhi. This is the respect our swami pays to his Acharya and Lord

Purattasi Brahmotsavam for 10Days concludes on sravanam is a very important utsavam Monthly sravanam is celeblated with elan with procession of swami desikan. Swami Desikan has sung Saranagathi Deepika in praise of this lord
This is temple is just 2 kms from Lord Varadaraj swami temple. We can take a auto for 20Rs from the varadaja perumal temple. We can even walk from Varadaraja swami temple to thoopul.
