According to a recent study, only two of the Rig Veda?s 20 branches and 21 sub-branches, six of Yajur Veda?s 101 branches, three of Sama Veda?s nine branches and two of Atharva Veda?s nine branches exist today. Four schools of Vedic chanting Paippalada, Ranayaniya, Jaiminiya and Maitrayani ? are about to vanish. Due to lack of financial support and societal concern there is a real danger of losing the remaining body of Vedic wisdom. While we continue to neglect our own tradition, international organizations like UNESCO have realized the value and importance of preserving vedic wisdom. In fact UNESCO has recently declared Vedic chanting and wisdom as ?a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage? and has announced initiatives to support the preservation of the
same.
The only way to keep the vedic oral tradition alive is to support people who have taken efforts to keep the tradition alive. It is in this context that performance of vedic yagnas become important as it is the link to keep the tradition alive by actually practising the mantras in a real life setting. One such attempt is performance of Somayaga at Bangalore during April 07. These initiatives would need support of all like minded people as the broder startegic intent of this yagna is to preserve the tradition and knowledge. I request all lovers of vedic tradition to help this cause in whatever way possible. While financial help is one of the ways, a greater help would be to help create awareness about our ancient traditions.
