It was interesting to read the meaning of 'KaaraDaiyan' from Shri
Vasu Vadhiyar.
Actually I thoughtit was so called because the 'KaaraDai' that was
kept as 'NeivEdhyam';which was made out of Rice flour ,Jaggery and
(kaaramaNi)Black-eyed Beans.
The sloka that went with it was:
'urugaada veNNaiyum Or aDaiyum vaiththu un nOnbu nootREn,
oru kaalum en kaNavan ennai vittu piryaadu errukka vENDum'!
Here the word 'un' could denote Shri Lakshmi or Savithri,Legend
says that it was she who observed this 'nOnbu'.
In Karnataka the nOnbu is called 'Moondru DOsai paNDikai'
They pile three 'dOsais' interspersed with
Cocoanut 'poorNam'as 'neivEdhyam.
I liked Vasu Vadiyars input and I have forwarded the same to my
sisters and daughter!

                                                                 ---
