Subject: Sri Madhura Kavi Azhwar Vaibhavam

Friends,

The sound Azhwar means, one who is deeply immersed in bagavath bakthy. Long ago
when the Vedic religion, was not respected and when there were not enough
acharyas to reveal the Vedic truth of the Bhrahma-Athma Sambandham and when the
Nastheeka religions, have deep routed in the divine land. By the graces of Lord
Ranganatha, twelve great gems were born as manifestations of the different
divine ornaments/weapons worn by Lord Padhmanabha.

The ever glorious Azwar Saints, had doing kainkaryam to their Sweet Lord as
their main ?profession?. All these twelve saints have expressed their
Abubhoothi in the form of sweet Tamil songs, which are called as Pasurams. Long
after the time of these saints, a great baktha named Natha Munigal, collected
and compiled these verses and set them to rhythm. Lord Ranganatha himself gave
the status of Sruti or the Vedas to these scriptures, on the request of Sri
Parakala Guru or Sri Thirumangai Azhwar.

Among the twelve azhwars, Sri Kaari Maran or Sri Nammazhvar, is called as the
Kulapathi. All other azhwars were so deeply immersed in bagavath bakthy that
they never bothered to preach others. But, Sri Nammazhvar acts as both an
Aacharya and an Azhwar. The glories of Swamy Nammazhvar are countless and would
be covered in another post (on Vaishaka Vishakam day, his birthday).

When all other azhvars had sung on Lord Vishnu, only one Alvar has sung just
about his Aacharya . That credit goes to Sri Madhura Kavi Azhwar, who took
charanagathy at the glorious feet of Swamy Nammazhvar. Sri Nammazhvar never
opened his mouth for several years and was in immense Dhyanam, of
Geethacharyan. Sri Madhura Kavi was born in the first varnam in a top class
Vedic family. As his name suggests, he was well versed in composing poems in
Tamil & the Sanskrit. When he was on a voyage to all the ksethras in the North,
a bright star led him to the place, where Swamy Nammazhvar was doing penance.

On seeing Swamy Nammazhvar seated under the Tamarind tree in the premises of
the Adi Natha Perumaal Temple, Sri Madhura Kavi Alvar asked him,

?When that (Jeeva) is born in the stomach of the dead (achethana), what will it
eat and where will it lie??. Sri Nammazhvar replied, ?It will eat that and it
will lie down there?.

This is interpreted as, when the Jeeva is born in the womb of its mother, it
realizes the ParaBhrahmam and realizes it actual Swaroopam and stays there in
the sweet immersion of Bhrahmanubhoothi.

On hearing this answer, Sri Madhura Kavi prostrates to Swamy Nammazhvar and
does complete surrender to him. Sri Madhura Kavi sees Swamy Nammazhvar as none
other Lord SriyaPathi himself and had sung 11 beautiful verses about the
greatness of Swamy Nammazhvar.

He starts his verse by satating that, just by saying the glories of Swamy
Nammazhvar, water or amudhu would be produced in his mouth. The he says that,
he knows none other that, his Guru and would take pride in singing the
melodious songs of Swamy Nammazhvar. The he declares that, Swamy Nammazhvar?s
holy feet is the only upayam for moksham. Then he says that, Sri Nammazhvar had
cut all his vasanaas at the root. He continues to sing the glories of Swamy
Nammazhvar blessing the mankind with Thiru Vaai Mozhi, which is the equivalent
of Saama Vedham in Thamizh. He finally blesses everyone, saying that, who ever
chants these 10 verses would reach Vaikuntam.

Sri Madhura Kavi Azhwar showed the path of Saranagathy to Nammazhvar?s feet to
the whole Universe, with his melodious Pasurams.

Thx,

Srimani.
