The Significance of the âaâ in PraNava (continued)
---
SwAmi Desikan just showed us that the primitive letter âaâ
indicates that the Supreme Lord is our protector and the affix of âAyaâ in
the dative case indicates He is the SEshi of all. Now he says that these two
natures of the Lord help the jIvas in great measure both in their bonded state
and in the liberated state:
âingu prakruti-pratyayangkaLAlE thOTRna rakshakatva-cEshitvangkaLukku
aj~nAna-duhkhbahulaiyAna leelA vibhootiyilum rakASAdi-bahulaiyAna nitya
vibhootiyilum prAcuryENa upayOgam. âkAraNabhootan rakshakanâ enkaiyAlE
pithAvinudaiya rakshakatvam pOlE ithu viSvasaneeyatamamAm. âSEshi
rakshakanâ enkaiyAlE priyanAna pati vaidyanAmApOlE hrudyatamamumAm.â
We shall now study this statement in detail.
 âingu prakruti-pratyayangkaLAlE thOTRna rakshakatva-cEshitvangkaLukkuâ â
Here, âprakrutiâ refers to the syllable, âaâ which is the primary
letter. We have already seen that this indicates the protecting nature of the
Lord. âpratyayaâ is the affix, that is âayaâ which indicates that the
Lord is the Master, that is, âSEshiâ.
 âaj~nAna-duhkhbahulaiyAna leelA vibhootiyilum rakASAdi-bahulaiyAna nitya
vibhootiyilum prAcuryENa upayOgam.â --
The two aspects of the Lord are prominent in this world as well as SrI
VaikuNTam. This world, which is known as âleelA vibhootiâ, is full of
ignorance (avidya) and misery (duhkham). The nitya vibhooti, that is, SrI
VaikuNTam, is full of glow, because of j~nAna and Bliss. In both these worlds,
the Lord is the protector and Master of the sentient beings.
âkAraNabhootan rakshakanâ enkaiyAlE pithAvinudaiya rakshakatvam pOlE ithu
viSvasaneeyatamamAm.â --
It has also been seen earlier that as the syllable, âaâ, is the cause of
all letters, the Lord is the original Cause of everything. As He is the Cause,
we can be sure of His being our protector. In our life, we see this directly.
Cannât we believe that the father protects his son in this world? It is the
fatherâs right as well as duty. Similarly, as the Lord is the Cause and the
Father of the world, will there be any doubt about He will certainly protect
the world? It is totally believable â âithu viSvasaneeyathamamâ. We must
take a special note of the expression, âviSvasaneeya-thamamâ, used by Swami
Desikan. Had he said âviSvasaneeyaâ, it would have meant merely
trustworthy; had he said âviSvasaneeya-tharamâ, it would have meant more
trustworthy compared to another. But, SwAmi Desikan has used the term
âviSvasaneeya-thamamâ only to emphasize that it is the most trust-worthy.
Next, SwAmi Desikan says that if the Lord Who is the Master tries to protect
the sentient being, it certainly most pleasant, isnât it? For this he cites
an example:
ââSEshi rakshakanâ enkaiyAlE priyanAna pati vaidyanAmApOlE
hrudyatamamumAm.â --
In this world, if the husband, who is lovable for the wife, happens to be a
doctor also taking care of her health, will there be anything more pleasant to
the heart than it? SwAmi Desikan says it is âhrudyatamamumAm.â â The
most pleasing to the heart. Had he said merely, âhrudyaâ â it would have
meant mere âpleasingâ. If he had said, âhrudya-taramâ, it would have
meant, âmore pleasingâ, compared to something else. Since he has used the
term âhrudya-tamamâ, he wanted to mean âmost pleasing to heartâ, with
no comparison.
