Dear Sriman Krishnamachari :

Thanks for your mail.

I have asked my AchAryan , Srimath Azhagiya Singar this question
and I have recieved the clear answer that Women should not chant
VedAs . This is sishtAchAram . That is good enough for me . Women do
not need to look upon this as some kind of discrimination or male
dominance . They are free to do what they would like to pursue in this matter
as long as their AchAryan directs.

Smt. Saranathan has struggled with this question and has articulated
her efforts to find some compass inside her and has concluded very well
in the fourth of the series of postings about this subject . It was a moving experience
to read her postings and conclusions in front of Raamar Sannidhi . Varattu
Padippu is quite different from genuine bhakthi that brings tears to one's
eyes on experiencing BhagavAn as Sarvam .

One of the recent correspondents wrote that the current MadAdhipathis have
some vested interest in keeping women away from reciting VedAs . It is very
insulting to make such statements regarding our AchAryAs . I have rejected
that posting since it was out of line . His point was that we should question
the ulterior motives of our AchAryAs and should not accept all waht they say
or direct in such matters . I can not acept this view .

We have had plenty of discussions on this subject and I will close this
series . Please consult with your respective AchAryan and get a clear
ruling and proceed accordingly .

Thanks very much ,

Subject: Re: [Oppiliappan] Re: Women and Chanting Vedas

My humble opinion on the interpretation of SAStra-s is that this is done by our current AcArya-s for the currrent time.  SAstra-s are very complex by nature, and can contain apparently conflicting guidelines.  This is why we have our learned AcArya-s, who guide us by interpreting the SAstra-s correectly.  So the question that should be asked is:  Does your AcAryan say that women should chant veda-s in goshTi-s in the temples, whether they should learn chanting veda-s, etc.  I do not know the answer to the question definitively, since I have not asked my AcAryan this question directly.  It is my feeling that in our country, in our ASrama-s and Mutt-s, the women are not part of the veda pArAyaNa goshTi.  There are no women students in the veda pArAyaNa schools conducted by our revered AcArya-s, as far as I know.

Dear Sriman Krishnaswamy,

I agree with you. Anyway, we have sarvIya SAkhA (vEda for all),
thiruvAimozhi, as the AchArya calls it in "dravidOpanishat tAtparya
ratnAvaLI". Better to concentrate on its meanings in simple Tamil/
some other language.

consider women as not fit/qualified (for any reason) to chant the
Vedas. As to whether the shastras themselves have prescribed a
prohibition, opinion does not appear to be unanimous.
