Dear Swamin
I have earlier written that darpai can be reused repeatedly in situations where
the availability of darpai is difficult as in U.S.
I had this from good authority who is scholarly in vedas and rituals . This may
not be necessary in India where darpai is available in plenty.
When a person is performing an auspicious homa ,the pavithram is made of even
number of darpais and when a karma is for inauspicious reasons, it is made of
odd number of darpais
This is the reason why pavithram is changed between karmas.
After the karma is over, the pavithram is untied and can be reused after tying
it properly.
The change of pavithram is not necessary when karmas are of same nature.

Respected swamin,
Please check with vEdiks about reuse of darbhai, especially
pavithram. When some one is the kartha for more than one homa at a
time, I have seen the vediks insisting on not using the same
pavithram throughout. After the kartha has intiated one homa and
moves to do sankalpa of the other homa, the pavithram used in the
first homa is secured and kept in the custody of the vediks of the
first homa. This will be returned to the kartha when he resumes his
seat in the homa.
When he takes his seat in the other homa, a different pavithram is
used. After the completion of the homas the pavithrams have been
discarded.
Another practice from family circles is that elders used to insist
that it is not enough that we place the darbhai on food stuffs during
eclipse, we must also see to it that it is removed after the eclipse
is over and discarded.
I have read specific instruction to this effect in books on tarpanam
and and such other practices.
Regards,
jayasree saranathan.
