Dear srivaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

Now we will take up the individual traits of each champion and also see then how finally raama became the champion of champions.

a.       raama defeated raavaNan – known and hence ok – this is finals.

b.       from final to semifinal - Vaali defeated raavaNan – and that vaali was killed by raama - Further raavaNan was always afraid of vaali – that is said by vaali himself to raama that if you are worried about your wife having been taken by raavaNa – I would have easily brought back her from raavaNa – this claim by vaali or saying is available in kishkindha kaaNdam – in the course of arguments between raama and vaali before vaali died. vaali says so to raama. The exact slokams etc later.

c.       Again this raavaNan was defeated by kaarthaveerya arjunan in a scuffle between them. So raavaNan was defeated at the hands of another person – does it sound sense for calling raama a champion of champions – because raavaNan is defeated for the second time.

d.       That kaarthaveeryan who defeated raavaNa, was defeated and killed by parasuraama. So a victory for parasuraama over kaarthaveerya means a win over raavaNa also – as per our modern sports rules – may be a simple bye is given. That means, in simple terms, raavaNa is defeated the third time also. Then again that question arises as in point c - does it sound sense for calling raama a champion of champions? Now see below.

e.       This parasuraama is a braahmaNa - who destroyed kings and kshathriyaas for 21 generations – not really 21 times – [means he lived that long] – when that parasuraama challenged kOsala raama, raama simply accepted and showed his prowess against parasuraama – not a war really – nobody lost life, no exchange of asthrams and sasthrams between raama and parasuraama – but jamadagni raama accepted defeated at kosala raama's hands and then simply took up thapas in mahendra parvatham. That parasuraama who won over kaartha veeryan, who in turn won over raavaNan, was defeated by raama.

This means kosala raama won over parasu, kaartha, raavaNa and vaali – 2 direct, 1 indirect and 1 without fight.

f.         When this dual between 2 raamas was done – at that age of 12 of kosala raama – [or 16] – not even a qualified kshathriya to do fighting in a war as per dhasaratha his father – at that stage.

Kosala raama did this dual with parasu - when raama accompanied visvaamithra, and finally got seethaa's hand in mithila and while returning back with seethaa.

But later – after nearly 26 years [12 years of enjoying married life and in the 14th year of forest life – adding to 26] only that 'already defeated' raavaNa was defeated once again and killed.

In these 26 years, lot of experience gained in wars and lot of additional asthrams and sasthrams and 2 vaishNava dhanu: obtained from sage agasthya

g.       So the conclusion is - when raama at 12 or 13 could win over parasuraama – that too without a real fight - Can we say that is the achievement? Any objections?

h.       And that is the real qualification for raama to be called 'champion of champions' and not that killing of raavaNa – the already defeated one.

i.         Later fight with raavaNa is only for 'seethaa's sake' - as said by raama – re – 'roles of lakshmaNa' series – for raavaNa is already defeated many times - literally also.

Perhaps the story of kaarthaveerya defeating raavaNa may be a new story to many. What is it we will see in next post.

Dhasan
