SrI: I think the problem faced by many people in places outside India, is the non-availability of darbhai. In this connection let me give some information which can be taken up with knowledgeable persons to explore the ways of having some substitute I have found an interesting connection between dharbhai and arugam pul in astrology texts. There are specific samiths for each of the 9 gruhas. Darbhai is for Ketu while arugam pul is for Rahu. For other gruhas the samiths are dried twigs of specific trees or bushes. Only for these 2 chaaya gruhas, grass variety is applicable. Since these 2 grahus are complementary to each other, I wonder whether arugam pul can be used in place of darbhai. The enormous wonder properties of arugam pul is coming to be known to people at large. It is also the practice to consecrate Lord Vinayaka on arugam pul aasanam. Perhaps the usage of arugam pul as a substitute for darbhai, though only in extreme conditions can be taken up with elders. But going by the rationale or reasons behind these practices, I think that arugam pul might be used as aasanam (for spreading etc). But the pavithram and koorchcham must only be made of darbhai. There seeems to exist no exact replica for darbhai. Regards, jayasree ------------------------ Yahoo!
