SrI:

Dear SrI Narasimhan:

You have asked about the significance of
abhivAdhanam posture .

AbhivAdhanam is performed by an abhivandhakan
as respectful salutation to a revered elder/AchAryan/
SrOotriyan (Veda-Saastra Vithpannan) .

The gesture involves placement over the ears , where
some of the key brain organs are ( amygdala , hippocampus
on the left side that controls emotions , speech and memory)
and recite with single minded reverence the AbhivAdhanam .
The right side contains Motor brain & 3D-Processing features.
One does not want to be distracted by external sound and
chatter while performing AbhivAdhanam to a respectful elder .
Over the right ear , the sacred GangA river is said to reside .
That is why we touch the right ear with our fingers at
the end of PrANAyAmam . That touch cleanses one
of asuddhis .

In the context of AbhivAdhanam , one can visualize
taking Ganga theertam with both palms and offering
argyam , Paadhyam and Aachamaneeyam waters
for the worshipful visitor . We do this upachAram of
Argyam, Paadhyam and Achamaneeyam to PerumAL
during thirvArAdhanam . A Similar situation of
reverential introduction of oneself to a respectful
elder can be invoked here .

There are also subtelities of introducing one's gOtram ,
Sutram , Veda Saakhai and one's own nAmam during
the abhivAdhanam to provide context . For instance , if
one is a BrahmachAri , the elder can pick up on the
sagOtram ( same gotram) aspects for potential marriage
prospects with a bride from gotram other than
that of the person performing abhivAdhanam .

The elder person recieves the abhivAdhanam and
blesses the younger one with wishes for long life
( Oh Narasimha Sarman ! dheergAyushmAn bhava ).

I have copied Sriman Vaasu VaadhyAr of the Vaideekam
group to provide additional insights .

NamO SrI Veda PurushAya ,
V.Sadagopan
