Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,
Continuing on that naama 'neeraja nayanaaya namah', - perhaps you all may feel how long to continue on that lotus eyed raama – it struck me suddenly why not on seethaa –– so I will just change that naama as 'neeraja nayanaayai namah' – the sthOthram of the 'lotus eyed seethaa' - instead of raama. Then I checked whther thyaagaraaja has given any krithi exclusively on 'seethaa maathaa' – yes, here it is -
raagam: rathnaangi. thaaLam: aadhi
Pallavi:
kalasa vaaridhijaam sathatham bhajE
kamala lOchanaam sree ramaam maam [ kalasa]
Anupallavi:
kaLabha gaamineem karibhir vruthaam
kamalanaabha hrudh kamala sthhithaam [ kalasa]
CharaNam:
kamaneeya jaya dhana dhaanya roopaam
kanakaadhi dhairya lakshmee svaroopaam
kamalaam mahaa santhaana roopaam
kamala aalayaam thyaagaraaja mOksha pradhaam [or roopaam] [ kalasa]
summarised meaning: thyaagaraaja says "I always worship the Lotus Eyed Lakshmee who
is born in milk ocean;
whose gait is like that of a young 'she elephant';
is gaja lakshmee - being surrounded by elephants,
abides in the Lotus of the heart of vishNu who has a Lotus in his navel.
has the pleasing forms of
jaya lakshmee,
dhana lakshmee,
dhaanya lakshmee,
kanaka lakshmee,
dhairya lakshmee,
padhma lakshmee [or is it aadhi the original then subsequent forms of 8]
mahaa lakshmee and
santhaana lakshmee;
resides in the Lotus;
bestows emancipation or moKsham – liberation to this thyaagaraaja.
Perhaps you may note in the above list of 8 lakshmees, thyaagaraaja gives a variation and counts 8, whereas we know of the list of 8 lakshmees, they are
Aadhi lakshmee
Dhana lakshmee
KaaruNya lakshmee
Santhaana lakshmee
Vijaya lakshmee
Vidhyaa lakshmee
Gaja lakshmee
Dhaanya lakshmee
Why suddenly this switch over from raama to seethaa – is not only to highlight on lotus eyed seethaa but to corraborate with raama's own words. For raama himself says 'my lakshmee, that janaka's daughter, my dear - priyaa - is having lotus eyes'.
Just thinking of her separation in the 'vasantha season' raama in his sorrowful mood on separation from seethaa does this 'pulambal' -
dheepayanthee iva mE kaamam vividhaa mudhithaa dhvijaah |
syaamaam chandhra mukheem smrithvaa priyaam padhma nibha eekshaNaam || 4-1-100
meaning: raama to lakshmaNa, "Enkindling the passion in me, are these umpteen gladdened birds, reminding me of my dear one, [seethaa] who is in the middle of her youth, that moon faced, and with the glances from her lotus eyes... [4-1-100]
syamaa padhma palaasa akshee priyaa virahithaa mayaa |
katham dhaarayathi praaNaan vivasaa janaka aathmajaa || 4-1-105
meaning: That youthful, lotus-petal eyed beloved of mine, that Janaka's daughter... how can that helpless lady bear her lives without me... [4-1-105]
thath chaaru anchitha padhma akshaam sugandhi subham avraNam |
apasyathah mukham thasyaah seedhathi iva mathih mama || 4-1-109
meaning: raama continues, "She, who has a pretty and beaming face with lotus eyes, that face which is fragrant, auspicious and scarless, and not seeing such a face my mind is as though sinking'... [4-1-109]
point: see here raama thinks of that youthful face, lotus eyes etc in the spring season and that makes raama to express his separation.
But nearby standing is lakshmaNa and he is separated from his wife for 13 years now - whereas raama is separated for few months now – maybe for a season – can be 2 or 3 months only. Oh lakshmaNa, you are great.
