Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,
We saw in the previous post, the krithi paramaathmudu and its meaning. We also
saw brahma coming and saying to vaalmeeki rishi that raama is the dharmaathmaa
and bhagavaan of this loKam.
brahma says 'raama: lOkE bhagavatha:, dheera, dharmaathma dheematha as in
slOkam [1-2-32b and 1-2-33a]. Since there can only be one person, who can be
attributed such superlatives, that too by brahmaa himself, this person can be
none else than that paramaathmaa - sriman naaraayaNan who has come as raama to
this world. So thyaagaraaja straight away says as brahmaa's words "hey
[addressed to maharshi as maharshE is to be understood], know that he is the
paramaathmaa"
paramaathmudu veluga muchchata baaga thelusukO rE [paramaathmudu]
meaning: please know clearly that he is the paramathama shining in
hariyata harudata suralata narulata akhilaaNda kOtulata andharilO
[paramaathmudu]
meaning: for all the hari, siva, dhevaas, humans and all living beings in this
entire galaxy, he is the paramathma shining in (veluga - pallavi)) Hari, Hara,
dhevas, human-beings, entire galaxy
charaNam: gagana anila thEjO jaala bhoomayamagu
mrga khaga naga tharu kOtulalO
suguNamulO viguNamulO sathathamu
saadhu thyaagarajaa aadhi aashrithulalO [paramaathmudu]
meaning: [continued] in sky, air, in fire , in light, in water and in earth,
[substance in all 5 boothaas] in animals, birds, mountains (naga), trees and
plants, in good and bad characters always in thyaagaraaja and et al who seek
him He is shining.
Of course, one small argument can be why ST mentions hariyata? raama is the
paramaathmaa - is he separate from hari? No, then why hari? Just to make
mention that he is the supreme even among the mummoorthys.
[Whenever the akaara ukaara makaara the split sabdha artham of the praNava
manthram is discussed, then the fourth bhagavaan vaasudhevan is talked about as
the combine praNavakaaran, even though the ukaaran is vishNu]
Like that hari is included here in the krithi, which is talking about that hari
only. Since said by brahma himself, reference to brahma himself is excluded in
the lines of krithi.
In slOkam what is said as 'dharmaathmaa' is said in the krithi, in as many
words as - narula, kOtula, gagana, anila, tarula etc, who is the antharaathma
shining in all these - he, that supreme raama. Simply put across by ST. Dear
bhathaas now you can vouch whether this is a great krithi or not.
That too brahmaa stresses to vaalmeeki 'bhaaga thelusukO' - oh sage, even if
you have any doubt, let it be known to you in full - as in raamaayaNam -
rahasyam prakaasam cha - known and secrets - told and untold let all be known.
So bhaaga thelusuko rE
See raamaayaNam slOkam where brahmaa adds on any thing doubtful,
rahasyam cha prakaasam cha yadh vruththam thasya dheematha: || 1-2-33
raamasya saha soumithrE raakshasaanaam cha sarvasa: |
vaidhEhyaa: cha Eva yadh vruththam prakaasam yadhi vaa raha: || 1-2-34
thath cha api avidhitham sarvam vidhitham thE bhavishyathi |
dheematha: = of valorous one
saha + soumithrE: = with sumithraa's son [lakshmana]
tasya + ramasya = of his, Rama's; [vruththam = stories or adventures]
raakshasaanam + cha = of the demons also [vruththam = misadventures]
rahasyam + cha + prakaasam + cha = unknown or known or
sarvasa: = in every detail
yath + vruththam + vaidhEhyaa + cha + Eva = which is the plight of vaidhEhi
also even
prakaasam + yadhi + va = revealed either or
raha: + vaa = unrevealed or
yath + vruththam = whatever legend happened
thath + cha = that also
a + vidhitham + api = un known even
sarvam + thE + vidhitham + bhavishyathi = all to you known it will be
meaning: The adventures of valorous raama along with lakshmana, and the
misadventures of demons, known or unknown in every detail, and even the plight
of vaidhEhi which is either revealed or un-revealed so far, and whatever legend
that has happened, all that will also be known to you, even if it were to be
unknown, as yet.
Few points on the name of raga in which this krithi is set:
vaagadheeswari = vaak + athi + eeswari
vaak - is the speech or words
athi - the controlling or lording
eeswari- goddess
so vaagadheeswari - is saraswathi
Brahmaa says the verse of 'maanishaadha' was given to you as per my wish only.
We have already seen this slOkam in post 1.
"math chhandhaath Eva thE brahman pravruththE ayam sarasvathee | 1-2-31
raamasya charitham kruthsnam kuru thvam rishisaththama |"
When saraswathi sitting in the tongue of brahma, her usual or normal seat, we
can definitely conclude it is the vaak athi dhEvathaa only has only given that
slOkam to vaalmeeki. [is it not a worthy tribute to put that krithi in
vaagadheeswari [saraswathi] raagaa.
Though thyaagaraajaa has sung a major portion of his work on raamaa, some on
krishnaa, also on sivan, vinaayakan et al, he has not sung any specific krithi
on saraswathi, the vaak dhEvathai or vaak adhipathi. For a poet to miss a
krithi or verse on saraswathi is some thing very special.
So as a sort of tribute to her, [or may be as a sort of compromise for his
missing a composition], he has kept this krithi in raga vaagadeeswari, and that
too at the start of his raamaayaNam or singing raama charitham. That too at the
very important place wherein brahma tells vaalmeeki 'please know raama is the
paramaathmaa'.
Actually thyaagaraajaa has given only one krithi only in this raga. That also
adds weight to this raagam as well the krithi.
[Two other krithis in raagaas after the name of sarswathi viz:
saraswathi [anuraagamulaEni] and
saraswathi manOhari [entha vEdu konthu O raaghavaa]
are again on raama only, but as such no krithi on saraswathi directly by ST.
other music experts can give comments if any krithi is there on sarswathi by
ST].
As assort of added information - these two are also 'only one krithi in a
particular raaga from thyaagaraaja in these 3 raagams. There are few more
'single krithi in a raagam' by ST. There was a discussion also in
sangeetham.com site on such one krithi only in a particular raaga recently].
Now read the krithi once more and enjoy raamaa the paramaathmaa, for any doubt,
refer brahmaa's assertion.
