THE GREAT ESCAPE
BACK AND FORTH
AzhwAr's pAsuram does not
only throw light on commerce and trade but also agriculture in
mAmallapuram.
The farmers till the soil
rich with lotus and water. They do it always. Perhaps in those days the
rainfall and water was available in pletny facilitating the harvest three times
( mUnu bhOgam). For this the tilling is to be done throughout. Hence, AzhwAr
terms as
"vuzhu-nEr' . This is "vinaiththogai' .vinaith-thogai indicates three tenses.
vuzhudha-nEr, vuzhuginRA nEr, vuzhap pOgum
nEr.
The wealth owing to this
agrarian occupation is reflected by this term.
The sengazhunEr pushpam
which is stuck while the farmer tills with the bulls, escapes from being
destroyed while the farmer goes back and straightens and again escapes and
straightens while he goes front. The great escape of
the flower is back and forth-pin mun pizhaithu
ezhundha
The scent from these flowers
emanante and eases the fatigue of the tillers.
This is reflected in the
pAsuram
"sezhu nEr malar kamalam
thirai vundhu va pagattAl,
vuzhu nEr vayal vuzhavar
vuzha,pin mun pizhathu
ezhundha
kazhu nEr kadi kamazhum
kadal mallai thla sayanam..." 2-6-7
What a good descritption of
the agrarian activity.
