Dear Devotee, Vedic and SriVaishnava cultures draw heavily from similes, hyperboles, and metaphors that were used by the poets to bring emotion to what otherwise could have been easily disregarded as dry facts and figures or mere fictional references. It this was done to ensure that what we experience is spiritual, something that can be aesthetic and inspiring for each one of us, and not just cause us to blindly hold on to a set of dogma. This is perhaps one reason why their are so many of these animal/human images among our icons. I am of the view that parrots signify great rishis, although we cannot be sure that every reference to a parrot can be the same rishi. The symbolism can be understood in that parrots have the unique ability to hear and repeat exactly what someone says to them. Similarly, our rishis learned the Veda from their teachers, remembered what was said, and repeated it exactly to an aspirant, without trying to change the interpretation. I hope this helps. adiyen Mohan Azhvar EmberumAnAr JeeyAr ThiruvadigalE Saranam http://www.vedics.net Yahoo!
