Sri Parthasarathi thunai

Srimathe Ramanujaya namaha

Sri Vara Vara munaye Namaha

Dear bhagavatas,

This series of translation of ?ArAyira padi guru paramparA prabhavam? to know
about the life history of our poorvacharyas has been discontinued for quite
sometime due to the difficulty in translating the very tough part of Sri
Alavandaar?s thiruppallipaduththal. We have requested help from some scholars
for the same. Since it is taking time we will now proceed to continue with rest
of the translation reserving the thiruppallipaduththal part for a later time.
From this posting we will continue to enjoy the divine happenings in the life
of our beloved acharya Sri elaiyAzhvar (EmperumAnAr)

Sri ILaiyAzhwAr Vaibhavam-11 (ElaiyAzhvar becomes the disciple of Periya nambi)

After Alavandaar attained the divine feet of emperuman, the kingdom of
Srivaishnavism remind barren like a kingdom without a king. So the disciples of
alavandaar along with Periya nambigal organized a meeting to decide who will
follow alavandaar to uplift the divine srivaishnava sampradayam. Whileeveryone
were in the thought of selecting the next acharya to the darshanam, Periya
nambigal got to their notice, alavandaar?s special grace on elaiyAzhvar and the
incident how the fingers of alavandaar unfolded hearing the commitments of
elaiyAzhvar. With deep belief in alavandaar, the disciples decided to make
elaiyazhvar as the next pravarthakAcharya (acharya to spread the philosophy to
one and all) and requested Periya nambigal to go and visit elaiyazhvar and
train him in a suitable way to adorn the post of pravarthakAcharya.

Periya Nambigal along with his family went to the divine sannadhi of Namperumal
and requested for permission to leave to perumal koil. Getting the permission
from namperumal nambigal proceeded towards perumal koil. Due to divine ishwara
sankalpam on the way, in madhurAnthakam, A-rikAththa rAmar koil nambigal and
elaiyazhvar happened to meet each other. Here in perumal koil elaiyazhvar, as
per the words of pErarulAlan through thirukkachchi nambigal decided to become
the disciple of Periya nambi, got the permission of pErarulAlan prostrated
perumal and thirukkachchi nambigal and proceeded towards koil (srirangam) to
get the divine grace of Periya nambi. On the way,to the great surprise of both
elaiyazhvar and Periya nambigal both of themmet in the Ari kAththa rAmar
sannadhi. Amazed to have the darshan of Periya nambi on the way elaiyazhvar
fell to his feet, happy to have attained the result even before reaching the
place he proceeded to. Periya nambigal was also very happy and
thankful to perumal and his acharya for fulfilling his wishes so soon and hence
lifted elaiyAzhvar with great joy. ElaiyAzhvar requested nambigal toshow him
the right path by doing hithopadhesam (teaching him the good) andthereby saving
him. Periya nambigal wanted to do the same in hasthigiri since that place has
its own speciality and has been highly regarded as, ?asthi hasthigirir nAma
thatra sailavarO mahAn I vidhAthrApyarchithO vishnusthasya sailasya moordhani I
punyakOtithi vikyAtham vimAnam punya varthanamII?

But elaiyazhvar remembering the sad incident of loosing the darshan of
alavandaar due to delay in time and also recollecting nammazhvar?s paasuram
?minnin nilaiyila? didn?t want any delay and hence requested nambigalto do the
respective upadesam immediately at that very place. Pleased with the deep
interest of the disciple Periya nambigal accepted and with greathappiness
lifted elaiyAzhvar?s hand and seated him under the magizha tree inside the
temple premises.

In the next posting we will see how Periya nambigal did panchasamskarams
toelaiyazhvar.
