srI:
Indeed in the past, I have been adviced by my grandmother that one
shouldn't read it at home. I have not read it end to end, but
portions of it. The uttarakhanda has an interesting description of
various types of hells and after-death conditions of jIvas, how some
of them come back as ghosts and haunt the living etc. It contains
mantras for srAddham, which some North Indians use for their funerary
rites. Probably, this is the reason for the advice against reading it
in home.

The other portions contain usual puranic topics - creation of
universe, incarnations of Vishnu, varnashrama dharma rules, geneology
of kings, vyakarana, vastu, temple construction rules, black magic,
lakshana of various gems, summary of Ramayana and Mahabharata etc. It
has charms to repel snake bites.

It has a different version of Vishnu Sahasranamam. I vaguely recall
that it has a nArAyaNa kavacham. I also recall it mentioning that
during kali yuga vedas will be insulted.

Regards,
Kasturi Rangan .K
