Taking Refuge in the
Tresses of Women
It is well known that the most harmonious
couples also have bouts of little quarrels, skirmishes or small difference of
opinions. These differences or quarrels vanish as the love and affection
overtakes. However, in the interregnum one tends to avoid the other and look for
places where the other is not present. This is what is called "vUDal' in the ancient tamil texts.
This vUDal is
followed by realisation "vuNardhal'
.
Does this petty quarrells also exist in
the life of beetles -vaNDu? Yes, says thiru-mangai AzhwAr's
pAsuram.
The beetles settle down in pairs and enjoy
themselves in the flowers. The natural 'vUDal'
arises. The masculine beetle immediately looks for a place to hide and flies and
tucks itself into the tresses of the women.
Who else but sri kaliyan can bring about
such wonderful 'rasanai' in the divine pAsuram-s of
thiru-veLLARari.
"..thangu pEADaiOADu, vUDiya
madhukaram,
thaiyalAr kuzhal aNaivAn..."
5-3-6;
vUdal-- misunderstanding.
thaiyalAr kuzhal -- The long hair of
women.
