Dear Shri Sukumar, Few more information that I know of regarding these manthrams. Every manthram is associated to three components: a) a Rushi who was made to realize the manthram i.e the vedi seer b) a deity associated with the meter and c) a Devatha who is worshipped directly via that Manthram In Sandhya Vandhanam, we say Pranavasya Rushi Brahma (Brahma is the Rushi) Devi Gayathri Chandhaha (Gayathri for the Chandas) Savitha Paramathma Devatha (The deity of worship is the ruler of the Savithru Mandalam - Surya Narayanan) While reciting Sahasranamam, before we start we say: Vedavyaso Bhagavan Rushi Anushtup Chandhaha Shri Mahavishnu Paramatma Shriman Narayano Devatha The above is self explanatory. There are additional components to a manthram too. The Beejam(the root seed Syllable), The Shakthi(energy), and various angams of the manthram. Gayathri means many of those manthrams that has the Gayathri as the Chandas. The one in the Sandhyavandhanam(actually two) is usually the de-facto Gayathri because many of us know more about it than any other Gayathri. As per Varnashrama Dharmam(am just telling the fact, don't mistake me for stating the fact), this should be recited only the male members of the Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya castes who have undergone the ceremony of Yagnyopaveetham i.e has entered or gone through the Brahmacharya phase. It is also said that in Kali yugam, pretty much everyone would recite this manthram. Whereas Ashtakshari is the one that reveals certain knowledge about the Atman and Paramatman.
