Sri Parthasararathi,

To say that one geographic location is a "karma bhumi" or a "punya
bhumi" and it reigns superior to another location places doubt on the
Paratvam of Sriman Narayana. Do not the Vedas and the Azhvars say that
this entire Universe has emerged from Him, and He pervades every aspect
of it? If so, then what is question of one place being superior or
inferior to another? All this is His, so therefore wherever we are is
sacred.

As to the sankalpam, the question arises as to how identifying the name
of where we are, the stars that are in ascent in some astrological
house, and the purpose of why we are doing something be of any concern
to the Supreme Being? Being the Knower of All and the Innermost Soul of
each and every one of us, would He not know what we are doing and why?
The sankalpam is really for us, to satisfy our egos that we are doing
something of great importance.

I feel that what is most important is to keep in mind that the purpose
of all rituals is to allow us the opportunity to think about Him for
sometime, and come to peace in knowing that He is taking care of all
stages of life. As the Azhwars say, the only pa:pam in our lives is
forgetting Him, and the only punyam is thinking about Him. If we cannot
recognize His presence in all of this, and our rituals are merely
followed out of fear, guilt or blind dogmatic faith, then there really
is no point in adhering to them. But, if we can see them as simple
customs designed to bring some semblance of peace and certainty in an
otherwise chaotic life, then let us perform them with good intentions,
in the spirit of service to Him.
