The question is slightly incorrect. Mahabaratha was termed as 5th veda.As regards, 4000 hymns of Alwars, it was Sri Nathamuni who initially compiled all the tamil works of Alwars and presented to the world. Bhagavad Bhashyakara after having seen the essence of vedas in the sacred tamil works of Alwars he started using these works as Kalashepa grantha. He directed his sishyas to write commentaries for these works as he did for Brahmasutras. It was Swami Vedata Desika who recognised these works at par with vedas and introudced for daily recitation ( parayanam alongwith veda parayanam) in Tirumala Hills. The title "Ubhayavedantacharya" was conferred upon Swami Vedanta Desika by the Goddess Ranganayaki. As Swami Vedanta Desika was unparallel in all the fields, many acharyas (who later broadly classifed as vadakalai and thenkalai) were at his lotus feet and attained Bhagavad Jnana.
