Dear Bhagavatas:
Presently, I was reading "Mahabharata" by Kamala Subramaniam published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.I do not have the original Sanskrit text of Mahabharata. So, I am not able to vouch for the veracity of the statements. She cites a reference to Radha in the Mahbharata Adhi Parva (Chapter 44 "The hungry Brahmin"- P137). If any Bhagavata could locate this in the original text and inform, it would help in confirming that Radha was indeed mentioned in the epic itself.

As far as I have heard in Kalakshepams, Radha is different from Nappinnai.
Many authors after the time of Mhabharata have referred to Radha. (e.g) Bhatta Narayana of the 7th C in his "VEni Samhara" starts his invocation with 3 Slokas, one of which has a specific reference to Radha. It runs as follows:
"kaaLindyaa: puLinEshu kEli kupitam utsrutjya raasaE rasam
gachchanteem anugachchatO asru kalushaam kamsaddvishO RAADHIKAAM /
tat paada pratimaa nivEsita padasya udboota rOmOdgatE-
akshuNNO anunaya: prasanna dayitaa drishTasya pushNaatu nah //

Quote from Kamala Subramaniam:
"They camped on the banks of the river. It was cool and very pleasant
to stroll along the banks of the Yamuna. Krishna had a special affection for this river. It was the river which was part of his boyhood days. He remembered the home of Nanda, the king of the cowherds. He thought of his mother in Gokula, Yasoda, and her love for him. He thought of RADHA and the place where they were wont to meet. It was a bower covered by jasmine creepers.... He wondered what Radha was doing now...He now had Rukmini and Satyabhama. They were dear to him. But, Radha was the one woman who had captured his entire heart. It was all years ago. Krishna's love for Radha was the same as it then had been. Radha was the northern star round which his thoughts wheeled their course as the mandala of the seven rishis did round Dhruva. She was constant as the northern star in her love for him. He would never meet her, he knew. He would meet her in the world beyond. But, that was not to be in the near future. So many things had to happen in the world before he could go to Radha. It was like the loging of the soul for God,this anguished yearning for Radha, for the touch of her hand on his fevered brow...."

Namo Narayana!
Srimathe Ramanujaya Namah:
Srimathe Nigamantha Mahadesikaya Namah:
Dear Malolanji and all the other devotees,
Pl. accept my pranams. I have the exact same question lingering in my mind for a long time. Why is Radha never mentioned in Bhagavatham and any Sathvika puranas. The answer I got from ISCKON and Sri Kripalu Maharaj is that Sri Suka Maharishi(Considered to be the parrot of Rahda in Barsana) attains samaadhi at the very mentioning of the name "Radha". That's supposed to be the reason for her not being included in Srimad Bhagavatham. The six goswamis following Sri Chaithanya Mahaprabhu exclusively talk about the significance and the importance of devotion to Srimathi Radharani. In one of the books by Gaudiya vaishnavas, it is also mentioned that Radhakund is the topmost place for a gaudiya vaishnava. Only one upanishad (I forgot the exact name :something like Radhikaupanishd) mentions about her. It is widely talekd about that "Radha" represents the Hladhini shakthi (pleasure potency) of Sri Krishna. Sri Chaithanya Charithamritha of Krishnadas kaviraj has a lot of materials on Radharani specially the conversation between Sri Ramananda Raya and Sri Chaithanya. If you read the thiruppavai explanation by our poorvacharyas, I had the opinion that Radha could be equivalent of nappinnai because Radha was always among the Gopis performing pastimes with krishna and Thiruppavai is full of interaction between the Gopis. I am also very ineterested in learning about the relevance of Nappinnai in Bhagavatham or any other puranas.I asked Sri Rangapriya swami a similar question and he replied that Radha was one of the Gopis and he did not equate her to Krishna's potency. Please let me know if you hear more on this subject. It is of great interest to me as well. The previous discussion from Bhakti list on this topic is found here
