Dear All Srivaishnavas I am in broad agreement with the sentimernts expressed by Sri Thathachariar Swami. He has taken pains to give appropriate and relevant quotations and sayings from the scriptures with their verbatim meaning. These quotes are thought provoking. One has to take a broad view and must understand the words contained in the scriptures. While I am not here to belittle or trash the traditional views, I fear that even some of the traditional beliefs of ours will become temporal once a clearer understanding emerges - an understanding which is not a result of compromise or a reconciliation but as a result of a well researched and debated exercise. To fall back and quote what Sri Thathachariar Swamy has said in the present letter "Remember TRUTH is ever eternal and universal, TRADITIONS, more often are temporal and regional. This is not meant to insult anyone, but only meant to make us introspect and intrepret in the light of TRUTH and not simply tradition". I thank Sri Mukundan and Swami Sadagopan who have done all of us immense service by commencing a very lively debate on a very sensitive topic. At this point of time I am not in agreement with Mr. Mukundan even though convenience prevails to do so. My conscience is not in terms. Well, alas, while at the end of all the debate process on SIMILAR TOPICS, we are left to take one's own views, I sincerely wish that on this occasion a consensus emerges. No wonder, we are so gullible! Contrast this with Christianity and Islam- how they have taken a gully religion (confined to a narrow strip of Earth) and globalized it. I think we need to go back to basics of sanathana dharma, because, our great religion has been hijacked by centuries of tradition, sometimes, even at the cost of truth. Remember TRUTH is ever eternal and universal, TRADITIONS, more often are temporal and regional. This is not meant to insult anyone, but only meant to make us introspect and intrepret in the light of TRUTH and not simply tradition. While we enjoy the outpourings of our achAryas, Alwars, and other peripheral scriptures (out side of prasthAna trayams), let us not do disservice to them by limiting them to narrow boundaries. Let me state, these are the pillars of Sanathana Dharma- although we all know it, seems to me from the discussions going on that we need to be reminded: 1. Truth is one, wise speak of it variously (Ekam sat viprAh bahudA vadanti) 2. Let noble thought come to us from all over the world (a nO bhadrAh kratavO yantu vishvatah) 3. One who knows that he/she is blessed, will indeed receive the blessing (yOpAm Ayathanam vEda AyatanavAn bhavati) 4. World is one family (vasudhaiva kuTumbhakam) 5. IshAvAsyam idam sarvam yatkinchit jagatyAm jagat tEna tyaktEna bhujjItA mA gRedhah kasyasviddanam (The whole universe comprising of the animate and inaminate is permeated by the Lord. Relish your share with detachment or relish share that has been alloted to you. Don't envy others wealth. Please go back and read bhagavadgItA (kim anyaih shAstra vistharaih- what other shastras we need?). We have been brain washed and pushed into some real gully thinking. It is about time, we akake and araise. Because, we know better- even if we don't want to accept, in the name of tradition. Let truth shine! 6. saptAsyAsan paridhayah trissapta samidhah kRetAh (Seven outer limits and seven innert limits of our life yagna: Seven outer limits: Earth, water, fire, space, wind, day and night.
