Dear SrimAn P.T.Narayanan,

Your comments are very illuminating. Thank you for supporting
adiyane's attempts to understand the beauty of our "soodikoduttha
nAchiyAr's" phrase "venn pull tavattavar" in terms of modern,
present-day idiom and events. With regard to the "betel-leaves"
context, you will recall that in my original posting adiyane too had
referred to it. It stands confirmed now that you have pointed out to
us that it is based on the "nirvAham" of none other than the uncle of
our 'bhAshyakArar', the great Sri.Tirumalai Nambi (who, incidentally,
I may be pardoned for taking pride in saying, belonged to Tirupati
and in whose sacred lineage my paternal grandmother of the 'Tirumalai
ThOzhappachari' family at Tirupati descended across 10 centuries).

Thank you so much for putting the whole matter in the right
perspective. I hope you will not mind my taking the liberty to copy
this correspondence to other lists where adiyane's original posting
also appeared.

Regards,
dAsan,
Sudarshan
