Dear Bhagavatas: MahamahOpadhyaaya Sri Srivatsankachariar Swami once explained that the original intention was to offer a "vaDam" of "maalai" (since Sri Sita gifted him a "maalai" at the time of Sri Rama PaTTaabhishEkam) and that over a period of time people mispronounced it as "VaDa maalai" - the word "VaDa" meaning the edible that goes by that name! As rightly pointed out by Sri Sadagopan Swami, this is a tradition that has no Saastraic bnasis. As one is advised to offer to the Lord (not only Hanumaan) what one relishes most, lovers of "Hanuman" and "VaDai" started offering it to him as a garland! As for "Vetrilai", as rightly pointed out by Sri Sadagopan Swami, this is also a tradition (that is in vogue in the north and adopted by our own people without going into the rationale) and the practice had come to stay! Dasoham Anbil Ramaswamy =================================================================== Hello : Hanuman is a BrahmachAri (celibiant) .Hence VeRRilai Maalai is totally irrelevant . Vada Maalai is some thing traditional . There is no SaasthrEic basis for it either .What HanumAn will be happy about is Srimath RaamAyaNa Keerthanam / Padanam and especially Sundara KhANDam .
