Respectful SwAmin, AdiyEn went through your
explanation about the sources for your write up on " A
Revolutionary Lady".
AdiyEn feels that there is no need for this
explanation. Of cource, wherever a quote is given, it
will be most appropriate to give the source of the
quote.
AdiyEn learnt in several KAlakshepams, one fact -- it
may historic but it reveals the mind of our
poorvAchAryars. That frame of mind has been eroded
during the recent past for no reason.
During Sri Ramanuja's time, Tiruvaimozhi was the
subject of intensive kalakshepam by SriBhashyakaraa
himself. There was no written commentary. The Acharya
was requested by the desciples to write a commentary
for the Prapandam of Sri Nammazhvar so that the
Acharya's interpretation of the verses in Tiruvaimozhi
will be available for the posterity. Sri Ramanuja's
immediate reaction was negative. The reason he said
was really indicative of is greatness. He said, if he
put the interpretation in writing, it will be seen as
a scripture and the future generation will never
attempt to further improve it. The verses have a lot
of meanings and aspects of significance that may be
found by the bhagavathas in future. If he put his
views in writing that will be the end of it. No one
will make attempt to think afresh on Azhvar's
outpourings, saying whaterever has been written by him
(Sri Ramanuja) is THE interpretation and any more new
thoughts will be curbed.
Later, he asked Tirukkurkaippiran PiLlan to write only
a brief commentary on Tiruvaimozhi. It is a fact that
new commentaries came out later, such as
Onpathinaayirappadi, eedu etc. which gave a huge
amount of new thoughts, of cource , within the
traditional frame work. There is nothing wrong in
writing new commentaries within our siddhanta.
Freedom of expression should be there. Otherwise,
there will be stagnation and no initiative will come
up. That will be the beginning of the end of our
sampradaya which will remain confined to a few persons
only and in future it will be reduced to nothing and
burried in the archives.
Even if you have given new ideas, there is nothing
wrong. You have done a service only.
Sorry for this long writing.
dAsan
Anbil Sowmianarayanan SrinivAsan
