Dear srivaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

In my mail dated monday, May 22, 2006 on the subject "Seethaa's Education" I
wanted to have clarification from the elite bhakthaas of the lists. The first
para of that mail is reproduced here.

"dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, after reading the chapter of sreemadh
raamaayaNam yudhdha kaaNdam, I got this doubt. I welcome scholars in the list
to provide some insight on the following. Seethaa feels 'sokham' and weeps,
when she is taken in pushpaka vimaanam, to see raama and lakshmana hit by
weapons, and fallen on the ground. While she weeps over about the separation of
raama, she also says, 'as per [chamudhrika] lakshaNa saasthram, I have all
positive features in my body like padhma rEkai, my teeth not separated, my body
is like this, like this, etc. which are the lakshaNams of a 'uththama sthree' -
'high class perfect woman'.

My doubt, on seethaa's educational level or achievements on that "chaamudhrikaa
lakshaNa saasthram" arose out of the following slOkam.

sathya naamaani padhmaani sthreeNaam ukthaani lakshaNai: |
thaani adhya nihathE raamE vithathhaani bhavanthi mE || 6- 48- 8

[6 is yudhDha kaaNdam, 48th chapter, 8th slokam]

meaning: In the lakshaNa saasthraas, the padhma rEkhais of a lady are said to
be giving good results without fail. These, available in my body, have now
become useless for me, since my raama is killed.

Point: That clearly indicates seethaa knows well the 'lakshaNa saasthram'. That
also lead us to conclude she is well learned in this saasthram which is rare
even among 'learned'. When she is described or expressed of having this kind of
expertise at learning, only then I wanted a reference from vaalmeeki, where he
mentions that seethaa learnt this, this, etc, under so and so guru.

On the other side viz. raamaa's side, there is very clear evidence of raama
having undergone the 'sikshaa' - education under sage vasishta the kula guru -
re slOkam. [By sarvE it is meant all the 4 brothers - raama, lakshmaNa,
bharatha and sathrugna.]

sarvE vEdha vidha: sooraa: sarvE lOkahithE rathaa: || 1-18-25

sarvE j~naana upasampannaa: sarvE samudhithaa guNai: |

sarvE vEdha vidha: = all princes are, in Veda-s, scholars;

sooraa: = valiant ones;

sarvE lOka hithE rathaa: = all are, in worlds', welfare, interested;

sarvE j~naana upasampannaa: = all are intellectual ones;

sarvE samudhithaa gunai: = all are, possessors of, with merits - air of probity.

Meaning: All the princes are scholars in vEdhaas, valiant ones, all are
interested in the welfare of the world, all are intellectuals and all of them
possess an air of probity.

thE cha api manuja vyaaghraa vaidhika adhyayanE rathaa: || 1-18-36

pithru sisrooshaNa rathaa: dhanur vEdhE cha nishTithaa: |

thE manuja vyaaghraa: api = they, manly, tigers, even;

vaidhika adhyayanE rathaa: = vEdha, studies, engrossed in;

pithru sishrooshaNe rathaa: = in father's, service, delighted in;

dhanurvEdhE cha nishTithaa: = in art of archery, also, experts.

Meaning: Eventhough those tigerly-men, viz. the princes, are engrossed in the
studies of vEdhaas, they are delighted to render service to their father and
they are also the experts in the art of archery.

Point: The 4 brothers are stated here as 'sarvE j~naana upasampannaa:'. When
hanumaan talks about angadhan's qualities of intelligence, tactics and
abilities following elaborate points are added as notes.

The IQ [intelligent quotient] of an average person is eightfold and is said as:

sishroosha srvaNam cha Eva grahaNam dhaaraNam tathaa |

ooha apOha artha vijnaanam thaththva jnaanam cha dhee guNaa:

1.                  sishroosha = assiduously polite - attentiveness

2.                  sravaNam = ardently listening -  heedfulness

3.                  grahanam = instantly grasping - receptiveness

4.                  dhaaraNam = continually remembering - retentiveness

5. ooha = discrimination of pros and cons - speculativeness

6. apoha = indecisiveness about the undesirables and receiving
the worthwhile - fastidiousness

7.                  artha vij~naanam = substance's comprehensive knowledge -
omniscience,

8.                  tattva j~naanam = quintessence's profundity - acumen.

The fourfold tactics [or abilities] are

Saama = placation,

Dhaana = presentation,

Bhedha = partition,

dhanDa = persecution.

The other way these four are

mano bala = self-assuring strengths of self-opinion,

baahu bala = self-shoulders,

upaaya bala = self-ideation

bandhu bala =  self-consistent supporters.

The fourteen fold abilities of a good leader is spelt as

1. knowledge of place and time,

2.                  physical and mental sturdiness

3.                  enduring troubles

4.                  knowing all possible

5.                  skilfulness

6.                  self-defence

7.                  maintaining confidentiality of strategies

8. avoiding unwanted debates [or not uttering lies]

9.                  courageousness

10. recognising strengths and weaknesses of one's own and of
others also [SWOT analysis of modern management science]

11.              faithfulness

12. sheltering the seekers of shelter

13. showing anger at appropriate times

14. unwavering in opinions or actions.

Perhaps this shows that the basics of modern management theories are taken from
sreemadh raamaayaNam.

Why I quote all these here is to show our heritage is great. Dear bhakthaas,
You feel I am straying elsewhere. No sirs and madams, because our subject is
the 'education' of seethaa and raama, the heroine and the hero of raamaayaNam.

In the above slOkam we get that word 'sisroosha' which we generally take the
meaning service, but here please see it means attentiveness.

We have to continue our topic in next post.
