Post 3
Dear srivaishNava perunthagaiyeer,
We saw in previous two posts how raama did upaasanai to the ocean and
how he replied that his basic nature cannot be changed - No to the
deep becoming shallow nor solidify the waters.
Now let us change the scene. Scene 2: the happening in sundhara
kaaNdam ? hanumaan's tail was lit with fire at the orders of
raavaNan. Seetha sitting in asOkha vanam just heard - not seen - that
hanuman's tail was put on fire. She did not see for herself nor
hanuman pleaded with her that agni in his tail is torturing him with
thaapam ? heat and she has to do something so that he is saved. [Of
course hanumaan has that varam ? boon from all dhEvaas that they will
not harm him but ? see what she asks to that firegod].
She asks ? hey agni, change your basic nature of heat and be cool to
hanumaan - and that firegod -agni - also obeys and remains cool to
hanumaan. please see following slokams.
vaidhEhee sOkasanthapthaa huthaasanam upaagamath| 5 ?53-26
meaning: seethaa, with a lot of sorrow, approached the firegod.
upathasthE visaalaakshee prayathaa havyavaahanam |
yadhyasthi pathi susrooshaa yadhyasthi charitham thapa: |
yadhi vaa thvEka pathneethvam seethO bhava hanoomatha: || 5- 53- 27
meaning: That broad eyed seethaa requested the holy fire by saying,
§ if I have served my husband sincerely,
§ if I am true in my character,
§ if my husband is a Eka pthnee vratha ? having one wife only -
and
§ if he has good intentions on me,
then be cool to hanumaan.
yadhi kinchith anukRosasthasya mayyasthi dheematha: |
yadhi vaa bhaagya sEshO mE seethO bhava hanoomatha: || 5 ? 53 -28
meaning: be cool to hanumaan if that highly intelligent raama is a
little compassionate on me and I have luck enough for unification
with him [luck enough for me to join my husband]
yadhi maam vruththa sampannaam thath samaagama laalasaam |
savijaanaathi dharmaathmaa seethO bhava hanoomatha: || 5 ?53 - 29
meaning: be cool to hanumaan if that raama thinks me as full of good
nature or character, and as one always seeking union with my husband.
yadhi maama thaarayEdhaarya: sugreeva: sathyasangara: |
asmaadh dhu:khaambusamrODhaath seethO bhava hanoomatha: || 5 ? 53 -30
meaning: be cool to hanumaan if that king sugreevan is truthful to
his words of releasing me from this ocean of sorrow of separation
from my husband.
Point: Hanumaan also gets a doubt whether the fire is burning at his
tail or not. Sees for himself that is burning but he did not feel
that heat.
dhahyamaanE cha laangoolE chinthayaamaasa vaanara: |
pradheepthO~gnirayam kasmaan na maam dhahathi sarvatha: || 5-53 ?33
meaning: hanumaan thought whether the fire is really burning or
not. `Yes it is shining but how is that it is not burning me by that
heat'.
dhrusyathE cha mahaajvaala: karOthi cha na mE rujam |
sisirasyEva sampaathO laangoolaagrE prathishtitha: || 5 ? 53 - 34
meaning: yes. It appears as a big flame of fire but it is causing a
break [splitting or shattering to pieces which happens when fire is
on] not hurting me, it appears as though a cool substance is added
there.
Point: now go back that yudhdha kaaNdam scene of ocean king talking
to raama ? saying I cannot change my basic nature by becoming shallow
or solidify my waters and compare with this scene ? here seethaa
commanding fire to change his basic nature to be cool and the fire
obeying by changing his basic nature. Hanumaan also testifying `yes
it is cool'.
Now, dear bhakthaas, judge for yourself who is capable and who is not
capable? She proves she is capable even to change the basic nature of
pancha boothaams like fire and whereas raama exhibits he is incapable
as with the ocean king. Oh, great, `seethaayaas charitham mahath'.
