Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,
We are analyzing the charaNam 1 of that beautiful krithi on the 'hasthigiri
dheepam' composed by that mahaa krishNa bhaktha OVS.
navaneetham maNakka varum dheepam
naaradha gaanam kEttu thuLLi ezhum dheepam
kuvaLai malar neela dheepam
aayar kulam vaazha vandu ninRa
nalam tharum dheepam -- kunRin
taking up the second line now - 'naaradha gaanam kEttu thuLLI ezhum dheepam' -
on hearing 'The Migrant Maharshi's singing, this hasthi giri 'lamp' jumps up
from his bed - his yoga nidhra (?). That Krishna jumps up from his position -
for the naaradha gaanam is so enchanting. Just now we read from our dear sri
sadagopan iyengar of coimbatore, sage utters those two words [or naamaas?]
'naaraayaNa naaraayaNa'. Perhaps that uttering of the naamaa itself is the
song, and that he relishes much.
See here sri thyaagaraja addresses his ishta dheivam raamaa with the title
'naaradha gaana lOla' in the ataaNaa raaga krithi. In this song there is no
obvious reference to raamaa, so, dear readers, can I take or have the liberty
to say it is addressed to my Krishna, for he is also 'neeradha sama neela
krishNa [another OVS mahaan's krithi] and nirupama guNa seela' for that great
brahmachari bheeshma says his gunams in more than 1000 words called sri vishNu
sahasra naamam [commentary has the name bhagavath guNa dharpaNam by sri
bhattar].
pallavi
naaradha gaana lOla nathajana paripaala [naaradha]
anupallavi
neeradha sama neela nirupama guNa seela [naaradha]
charaNam
neevu lEka E thanuvulu nirathamugaa naduchunu
neevu lEka E tharuvulu nikkamugaa moluchunu
neevu lEka E vaanalu nithyamugaa guruchunu
neevu lEka thyaagaraaju nee guNamula nEtu baadunu [naaradha]
incidentally that 'neela' dheepam is also covered here in this krithi.
[since that is not the krithi which I wanted to elaborate I stop here. Another
time we will see detailed comments and points on this krithi in ataaNaa]
But why lord of hasthi giri is said as a lamp - dheepam - see below sri swamy
desikan calls varadhan as 'pagal viLakku' in mei viradha mahaathmyam - [extract
from our respected sri Sadagopan's article on rathnaangi kainkaryam] - so all
great bhakthaas talk in same language.
aaavirbhaavam of the Lord with puNyakOti vimaanam
sukalEsam yeNNiya soozhvinai theerkkath-thuNintha ayanaar
aghalaatha anbudan koNda ayamEdha vEdhiyin mEl
pugal Ongu pon malai anna Or puNNiya kODiyudan
pagalOn pagal viLakkaagap-param sudar thOnRiyathE
meaning: Thus, Brahma carried out the aswamEdha yaagam for destruction of his
karmaas that led him earlier to think that insignificant worldly pleasures are
great and lasting sukhams. At the conclusion of the aswamEdham with great
bhakthi for the Lord, brahma dhEvan performed the vapaa hOmam. It was then the
month of chitthirai, sukla paksham, chathurdhasi, Sunday morning and hastha
nakshathram, when Brahma completed the vapaa homam. Immediately thereafter, the
supreme radiance of the Lord arose from the middle of the yaaga kuntam shining
like 1000s of Suns. It was like the rise of a golden mountain surrounded by
puNya koti vimAnam, which made the regular Sun look like the lamp lit in a
bright day.
The words 'pagal viLakkaaip param sudar' is important - magnificent lamp
appeared as a lamp in broad day light - OVS also says repeatedly 'dheepam' -
the lamp only can have a sudar - not a yaaga kundam nor a major forest fire.
Oh a really great krithi. We will continue in next post also.
