Dear all, My understanding is the temples, especially the kind we have been talking about come under State Govt. This is true in Karnataka. These temples have architectural, historic and religious significance. However, very few people, if any use them. It is the duty of Govt to maintain these national treasures. Even in profitable shrines like TTD, significant monuments are being destroyed for some mundane reasons. The Swami pushkarani in Tirumala is among the filthiest body of water surrounded by human droppings. We need some policy change here. Unlike minority religious institutions, these types of Hindu temples have very little autonomy. Christian organizations also operate educational/business/health care institutions with very little Govt interference. Most Hindus have no other way than to use those institutions. The profit made there is used to expand their business as well as maintain their organizations and expand missionary activity. This is a vicious cycle we inheritrd thanks to our visionary founding fathers, whom I don't like to even name. As Hindu indtitutions get weaker by the day, they all prosper. It is the newer temples in urbanite neighbourhoods (like Andal ranagamannar, Sanjaynagar or Padmanabha nagar temples in Bangalore)that are religious centers and are private. We need to organize better and impress our the Govt. on the monumental, architectural and historical value of the trasures and leave the sectarian considerations way in the back drop. We saw how the attempt of using one sects view failed in TTD could not save thousand pillar hall. Less than 0.1% of Indians have heard of any Alwar's name let alone their pAdals. This is the truth. Just something to introspect and look at the big picture and take a holistic stand and not bury our heads in the sand. dAsan K. Sreekrishna Tatachar ------------------------ Yahoo!
