kuththu viLakkeriyak

? KrishNa and Nappinnai compete with each other in opening the door-?Me
first? both say.
? ?Eka Lakshyam dayaayaa:? says Swami Desikan
? Why the gOpis go on calling again?
? It is because KrishNa and Nappinnai were hugging each other for too
long
without noticing the gOpis.
? The gOpis seem to ask Nappinnai: ?You said, na kaschit na
aparaadhyati?-
?Who does not err? Even if we have erred, can you be indifferent to us for
so long??
? Turning to KrishNa, they seem to ask ?You said
?tamm aDiyaar tirathagathu TaamaiyaaL aagilum sidagu UraikkumEl
Enn aDiyaar adu seyyaar seidaarEl nanru seidaar enbaar pOLum?
Meaning:
?Even if TaamaraiyaalL (Thaayar) were to complain (sidagu uraikkumEl) about
a Prapanna, the Lord would retort saying ?My devotee would never do wrong;
Even if he were to appear being in the wrong, it is only the right thing for
me?
* Note ?TammaDiyaar? before Prapatti and ?Enn aDiyaar? after Prapatti!
- Sidaguraikkum: Sugreeva gOshTi
- ennaDiyaar: ILayaperumaaL gOshTi
- nanru seithaar: karaNa Trayam
That being the case, even if Nappinnai were to prevent you, you should
ignore that and rush to grant us your grace!?
? Achaaryas used to explain: ?aasrayaNathukku munn avaL vaadaaDum; pinn
avan
vaadaaDuvaan? meaning for a mumukshu, Thaayaar would plead for his being
accepted; after acceptance, it is PerumaaL?s turn to defend the Prapanna?s
actions!?
? In Svapadesam, the reference to ?Kutthu viLakku? relates to the
expansion
of Tattva Jnaanam
? There is a message in this: We should not sleep without a lamp burning!
Let us at least have a ?bedroom light?!
? The burning of a lamp incidentally constituted an ?agjnaata sukritam?
to a
mouse! A lamp was about to go off when a mouse that was running around
accidentally stamped on the wick that spurred the lamp to shine better. This
unintended PuNyam resulted in the mouse being born in the next birth as
Lalithai, the consort of King of Kaasi!

kOttuk kaal kattil mEl *

The four legs of the cot were made of ivory.
? In Svapadesam, Achaaryas advise on the four Purushaarthas.
? Even if her parents were to provide her with a sophisticated set of
bedroom furniture, a wife would prefer only the bed presented by her
husband. Here, Nappinnai seems reluctant to leave the bed that KrishNa had
provided her!
? The Lord preferred mathuraapuri paryankam to the ?Naaga paryankam? on
the
milky ocean. ?naagaparyankam utsrujya? mathuraam pureem?
? And he offered this Paryankam at Mathuraapuri to do Paadapooja to
KuchEla!

meththenRa paNYcacayanaththin mEl ERi *

? An ideal bed should have the following 5 characteristics, namely,
Beauty, Softness, Coolness, Fragrance and Whiteness.
? While ?Pancha sayanam? included inter alia ?softness? why should they
make
a special mention of it again as ?methenra pancha sayanam??
This is to indicate that softness is the most important aspect for an ideal
bed.
? In Svapadesam, Pancha sayanam refers to Artha panchakam.
? They seem to ask KrishNa ?As Rama, you lay on hard stone. Do you want
to
take rest on soft bed? Is this the reason why you are reluctant to give up
the bed now?? ? cf ?NaDanta KaalgaL nondavO?? and ?yEn paLLik koNDeer
ayyaa??

koththalar pUNGkuzhal

? The story goes that when a princess could not get sleep on bed having
all
these five characteristics, the courtiers examined the bed again and they
found a bunch of hair (fur ball) inside the bed that was tormenting her!

nappinai koNGkai mEl *

? The Taniyan of gOdha piraTTi also refers to her breasts:
?Neela thunga sthana giri thaTee suptam udbOdhya KrishNam?
? In Svapadesm, they represent Jnaanam and Bhakti

vaiththuk kitan^tha

? The gOpis seem to point out how KrishNa was motionless as if in a swoon
and ask him ?Even when you drank poison at Pootana?s breast you did not
swoon. How come, now you have not tasted poison and yet you seem to be in a
swoon??
? ?Maybe, the marbu of Nappinnai was so soothing that you do not like to
miss the sparsam even for a second!?
? ?Or, is it because, you won NeeLa through a wager that you are so much
attached to her that you lent your arm to her for a pillow and you do not
want to disturb her sleep by moving your arm away??
malarmaarpaa

? They seemed to enjoy each other?s embrace!

vaay thiRavaay *

? ?At least, open your mouth and say a word or two?
? Give your broad chest to Nappinnai; Give us at least your ?word? ?
?maa sucha?

maiththataNG kaNNinaay

? Addressing Nappinnai, they seem to ask: ?We thought that with eyes
smeared
with collyrium, you will invite us. Now, the very same collyrium-filled eyes
have monopolized KrishNa?s attention so much that he would not let him come
to us!
? ?Can you not advise him to do the needful??

nI un maNaaLanai *

? ?Don?t think KrishNa is only your hubby. He is ?LOka bhartaaram?.
? You cannot enjoy all by yourself what belongs to all of us. Please help
us?
? Addressing KrishNa, they ask: ?Is Aasrita RakshaNam? for all except
poor
gOpis??
eththanai pOthum

Forever

thuyilezha ottaay kaaN *

? ?Why do you hesitate to wake him up??

eththanaiyElum pirivu aaRRakillaayaal *

? Addressing Nappinnai, they seem to ask ?You have been in his close
embrace
all through the night. Are you not still satisfied?
? It is true that you will never ever be away from him - ?agalakillEn
iraiyum enru alarmEl mangai urai maarbaa?. We do not ask you to leave him.
We only request that both of you should jointly grant us your darsanam!
? Please, please wake up, Wake him up also for our sake?
? A creditor who wants to recover his dues would first stand at the door
of
the debtor; then he would sit at the step and then lie down in protest to
get back possession of what belongs to him. Please do not drive us to that
situation of resorting to ?Dharna?. Make haste! Wake him up?
? When describing to Sumantara the duration of their vana vaasam, Sri
Sita
tells him it will be for 10+3+1 years. What is the significance of this
computation? May be she meant that it will be -
- 10 years with Rishis
- 3 years in ChitrakooTam and
- 1 year in RaavaNa?s custody.
- Our waiting seems to be longer than all these 14 years. Have mercy on
us!?

thaththuvam anRu

? This is not proper
? ?Tattvam? means svaroopam
? This is against your svaroopam which is Kripa and Purushaakaaram.
Please
remember this!
? ?na thath? You are not like him. He may be DanDa dharan and therefore,
merciless in meting out justice. But, you are mercy incarnate.
thakavu

? Takavu: Mercy
? In Svapadesam, Achaarya!
? It is Emperumaan?s quality of giving fruits according to karma. You are
not like that. That is why, we are appealing to you?

KUTHTHU VILAKKERIYAK
ENGLISH VERSE TRANSLATION
(MS. SHOBA RAMASWAMY)
-------------------------------------------------------------------

?With long stemmed lamps alight
Around the ivory-legged bed,
On the soft mattress
You lie clasping
Nappinnai of the flower-bedecked hair
In your broad shoulder?s embrace!
Do pronounce a word!
She of the khol-lined eyes!
Never will you chase away His sleep,
Nor for an instant
Bear His parting!
In truth, it becomes not your self,
Oh! My Maidens!?
