ibiblio Systems Central: LVS Cluster

In June, 2003, ibiblio switched its main web/ftp site from a single server to an LVS (Linux Virtual Server) web cluster. Normally, www.ibiblio.org and the sites hosted by ibiblio receive about 8-10 million hits per day. It might not sound like a lot compared to Google or cnn.com, but it's quite a bit for a single server. When a site was more popular than usual, due to a Slashdot article or a popular Linux distribution, for example, response slowed down. Now, site performance has increased, and we have room to grow.The LVS cluster has redundant directors, 8 production nodes (real servers), and 1 development node. We use keepalived to manage failover.
