Results Achieved to Date

1. Organization of program work staff.

2. Introduction of the program and coordination with sectors representing the university (teachers, students, alumni), services (SILOS 1 and 2), and the population (community #7 and #20).

3. Configuration of program management and community operations groups.

4. Establishment of a public information and publishing work force.

5. Increased work day attendance and participation of students, alumni, teachers, and the community in defining the basic curriculum of the health occupations.

6. Establishment of multi-professional staffs (students in physical therapy, audiology and occupational therapy) to conduct community diagnosis including identification of risk factors and health status reports in cities #7 and #20.

Assistance was provided by faculty members of different professional fields (i.e. doctors, nurses, historians and statisticians), as well as professionals in service (SILOS 1 and 2) and coordinators of community sectors #7 and #20. Once obtained, results were presented in meetings held for representatives of the community, respective SILOS, and the university.

7. Evaluation of operations in SILOS 1 and 2, based on input from employees and representatives of the communities #7 and #20.

8. Formation of work groups to address problems identified by health services in community #7. Composed of service personnel and community representatives, these groups are responsible for completing a detailed analysis of each problem detected and presenting alternatives for solution in view of relevant constraints.

9. Inclusion of family care and health protection training activities, since August 1993, for senior students in medicine, dentistry, and nursing.

10. Organization of a Curriculum National Seminar, last June (2-4) in Cali. The theme was "Crisis in Health Education. Three hundred health teachers from the Universities of Del Valle, Pereira Technological, National (Bogota) and Sur Colombiana (Neiva) attended the event, for which a report is being published.

11. Beginning in August 1993, in concert with curriculum reform, inception of the first common basic courses (in areas such as social sciences) for new undergraduates of the Health School's seven health professional programs.

12. Planning and design of physical improvements in SILOS 1 and 2 in communities #7 and #20 to accommodate in-service learning practices for students in medicine, dentistry, and nursing.

Achievements Specific to Dentistry

1. Seminars on the UNI Program, to introduce the initiative and increase program awareness among teachers, students and school graduates.

2. Seminars on curriculum analysis and revision, for teachers, students, graduates, and communities (six seminars).

3. Participation in the design for physical improvements in SILOS 1 and 2 to accommodate in-service learning practices in communities #7 and #20.

4. Student education activities related to family care and health protection, in order to participate in the practices being developed by medicine and nursing students.

5. Affiliation of two professionals experienced in community dentistry to coordinate field work among students and other teachers.
