Befriend your web server
Your web server is your best friend. Get to know what server your system is running and then familiarize yourself with it. Just knowing what "brand" it is can clue you in on its limitations and advantages. These days, almost everybody is running an Apache Web Server simply because it's the best. Know what technology your web server supports. For example, with Apache, the administrator may have compiled in a bunch of really cool modules that extend its functionality. If it has mod_perl or php compiled in, then you have powerful tools for interacting with databases and a built-in perl interpreter so your cgi scripts will run faster. You should also try and be a little nice to your web server. If you're going to be doing tons of really froody stuff, then you might want to ease off the graphics. Don't overload the server and the software with really hardcore php stuff and tons of itty-bitty graphics everywhere. As a general rule anyway, try not to have more than three or four hardcore graphics. This site takes that rule to heart, and you only see one graphic, and it's only 1 kb! Follow its link and you'll find another, much cooler site that does the same thing. Of course, if you're really superficial or just doing the bare minimum to pass, then the four-graphics rule won't apply to you because you probably won't be putting up any real content and will have to rely on shnazzy glitz to get people to look at your site. |
