Euro Trivia (904)

Postby theeuro on 19 Jan 2009, 22:33

A discussion in another topic lead me to post the idea that we should have some trivia about the Euro... I'm quite the fan of trivia. I thought it might be fun to post a new trivia question once per week. It is Monday now, but future trivia will be posted on Sunday. If it is popular enough, I'll redirect the trivia topics to their own forum.

This is 2009, week 4 of the year, so the trivia question is called 904. Next week's will be 905, etc.

Unless otherwise specified in the trivia question, the answer can come from all Euro circulation coins, even previous series of Euro coins. 2 Euro commemorative coins count as well. In guessing the answer, please include the denomination, year of issue (if applicable) and Member State.

Trivia #904: What is the oldest subject (person or object) depicted on a Euro coin?

must be the Mnajdra Temple on the Maltese 1c, 2c & 5c :D

The upper temple is the oldest structure in the Mnajdra complex and dates to the Ggantija phase (3600-3200 BC)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnajdra

the structure on the Cypriot €1 & €2 is 'only' :) 3000 yr BC

Great idea! :)

Well, there're more candidates...
- mountains: there are two peaks on eurocoins - peak Kriváň (Slovak copper cents) and peak Triglav (Slovenian 50 cent)
- plants: Austria, Germany and Finland have plants on their eurocents/2€ coin - oak [twig] (Geman copper cents), gentian (Austrian 1 cent), edelweiss (Austrian 2 cent), primrose (Austrian 5 cent) and raspberry (Finnish 2€)
- animals: Slovenia, Cyprus and Finland have animals on their coins - Lipizzaner horses (Slovenian 20 cent), stork (Slovenian 1 cent), moufflon (Cyprion coppers) and swans (Finnish 1€)

I think oldest are peaks - Kriváň or Triglav, it's probably impossible to tell which of these two. But anyway, even youngest of these objects is older than any Maltese temple or something similar. :)

Illioplius, to carry your considerations too far, think of the Slovenian 50 cent coin.
Above the peak Triglav is the constellation Cancer which indeed is very old. some billion years?

@MdV: great idea!

MdV,

Great idea!

But I think your trivia question went too far by the contestants :) If it is made by human I would have to agree with melitikus, if it is made by nature (or God) I would have to agree with SME.

Thanks,
Miguel

Great idea to ask a question every week.

Regarding the answer of this week: the correct answer(s) have already been given.

Once again: great idea!

CU sunday!

I'm quite surprised that nobody answered correctly...

The correct answer is: 'The Atom'.

Huh?
Are sure?
I don't see any atom there, only parts od electron orbitals... But you're probably right.
Did you know that answer before asking this question?

Of course I knew the answer... I based the question on the description, which says that there is an atom in orbit of the coin.

Are you sure it's atom and it's orbitals? It could also be planets and their''s orbitals... Even the description on the site says "...that is known as 'la fisica antica'or the study of the planets."

But in any case - this should be the right answer :) :) :)

The part of the description I used as the answer is this: '...separated by the outer edges of the image of a stylized atom inscribed in the background of the entire coin.'

I misquoted myself in my previous response...
