Euro Tivia (921)

Postby theeuro on 24 May 2009, 11:45

There's been a little time since the last trivia... so here are two... and they both have to do with Euro Banknotes...

1) What are the names of the seven islands (or island groups) depicted on the inset map on the reverse of Euro banknotes?

AND

2) Which EMU Member State issued the bank note with this serial number: S08309624371?

About (1) this is more of a geography question, and I was never good in geography. My shot is:

- Ibiza (Spain)
- Menorca (Spain)
- Mayorca (Spain)
- Corse (France)
- Sardinia (Italy)
- Crete (Greece)

But I also clearly see Great Britain, Ireland and Iceland ... I thought they were islands too.

About (2) S is the letter for Italy, so I am not sure if there is a trick in this question ;) So I vote for Italy so far.

Miguel, MdV is saying about an inset map, so, I think, he is saying about that frames in lower left corner.

There are just three islands, as far as I see:

- Guadeloupe (France)
- Martinique (France)
- Réunion (France)

There is also an archipelago that is visually on the same level as those three islands in frames, but this is geographically correctly situated (so it is not in an inset map). It's name is Canary Islands (Spain).

In my opinion, both Miguel and Illioplius are wrong about the islands, also MdV asked the names of 7 groups ;) .

I think the correct islands / archipelagos are:
The Azores
Guadeloupe
Martinique
Réunion
Madeira
The Canary islands
The Baleares

About the serial number I also think it is Italy who issued the banknote, but I agree with Miguel that this might be a tricky question.

I recently moved, so my euro notes are locked and can not check them right now, but I have not see one single image on the web that shows me in details those inset maps. Anyway, I knew I wasn't good in geography regardless ;)

If I have learned anything from these trivia questions it is that the answers can be found within the website.
I am unsure if there is a mistake in the first question.
Answer:
French Guiana (not an island)
Guadeloupe
Martinique
Réunion
Canary Islands
Azores
Madeira

As for the second question I would also go for Italy, I do not think this is a trick question because the country code and checksum match, I think it is fair to say that if the issuing county is not Italy then the National identification system has failed miserably.

I finally saw a fairly high quality picture, and I can see seven islands there. Still too small for to identify though ...

But why did you count e.g. Azores or Canary Islands, but you didn't count e.g. Ireland, Great Britain, Gotland, Iceland, Corse, Sicily, Crete, Sardinia...? :)

I think I've got it:
"Guadeloupe comprises five islands: Basse-Terre Island, Grande-Terre (separated from Basse-Terre by a narrow sea channel called salt river) with the adjacent islands of La Désirade, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante." ~ Wikipedia

So it's five islands and there is also Réunion and Martinique. Seven together, all in the inset map.

My answer on the second question is Italy, of course.

"The map of Europe on the reverse side of every bank note includes an inset of extended Euro Zone territories which are governed by France (French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion), Spain (Canary Islands) and Portugal (Azores and Madeira)."

@Guest,

still... French Guyana is not an island. So what's the seventh one?

The first part was a trick question. I'm impressed that so many people caught it. In fact, there are only six island (or island groups):

Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, Canary Islands, Azores and Madeira

The second part was the easier of the two, but I made is simple to throw everyone off:

The serial number S08309624371 has only one letter and that is what gives away which Member State issued the banknote:

S = Italy
