Denmark and Greenland

Postby Miguel.mateo on 02 Dec 2008, 07:18

Hi there,

I have read in the news that recent polls in Greenland are showing a massive favour to adopt from independence. If this were to happen, will they get immediate membership to the EU? Can they adopt the euro? Can they have their own euro coins?

Thanks,
Miguel

Greenland isn't even part of the EU right now (unlike the Faroe Islands, for whom this is also true, it initially *was* part of the EU when Denmark joined). The EU members (then EC) even had to ratify a special treaty to allow Greenland to leave after Greenland decided in a referendum it didn't want to be part of the EC.

At this point, if Greenland gained full independence from Denmark, it would have the same status as Andorra has now. I doubt that Greenland would want to re-join the EU at any point in the future, but if it did, it would have to do so apart from Denmark.

If Denmark adopts the Euro, there would have to be some sort of arrangement made in light of the fact that Greenland uses the Danish krone. Judging on the current wish to gain independence, I would guess that Greenland might form its own currency. It might be possible for Greenland to begin using the Euro, with an agreement to do so, as Andorra did in 2004.

Given the lengths to which the EU went to allow Greenland to leave, I'm not sure how the body might respond to a request to re-join... even as a separate entity from Denmark.

There would likely be no such desire, since Greenland seems to want to go about its business without Europe at this point in time. It looks like this applies to using the Euro as well. They may switch to the CAD or USD.
