Map of Iceland

The Euro is not just used in the Eurozone. Andorra, Montenegro and Kosovo and a handful of other countries in the world use the Euro as their currency.

Map of Iceland

if Iceland becomes a member of the EU and starts to mint the Euor coin, will the common side for the Euro be changed to include a map of Iceland?

Interesting question. My initial guess is yes, but the cost of doing so might be prohibitive. I imagine eventually a revised common side might come to pass, perhaps in 5 years or so. You know, I never gave that question a single thought until now! :)

On 1 and 2 € coins there's lot of space for Iceland. In case of 10, 20 and 50 cent coins there's problem because you can see stars on the place where Iceland should be, and on 1, 2 and 5 cent coins there Iceland is - aswell as on the banknotes.

I don't think the map is going to change too much with the new banknote series... Iceland is already represented on the current series.

Map of Iceland

Yes Iceland is represented on the current series of Euro Banknotes, however, it is in the wrong location.
The east coast of Iceland is a little right to the west coast of Ireland.

Regarding the proposed new Euro Banknotes the following dose not show Iceland.
Series 2, 13, 14, 24, 30, 33, 35, 36 & 38.

I have found that the map of Iceland is missing from a lot of maps of Europe.

The next question has to be, is Greenland a part of Europe?
What continent dose Greenland belong to?

I bet that this topic has everyone now checking their notes and coins.

You know, there have been other concerns about exact geographic location on Euro coins... for example, Malta is about 5 times its normal size in relation to the surrounding landscape and Cyprus is a little further west than normal. I imagine that Iceland will be in a similar situation if/when the time comes for their EMU entry.

Greenland isn't even a part of the EU anymore and will probably not adopt the Euro if/when Denmark does.

Greenland is, geographically, part of America.

It would have to be a pretty large banknote in order to geographically correct the locations of Iceland, Cyprus and Malta. ;)

Well, I think it has to be compromised. The map on a such small surface like a coin it has not to be in scale . The most important is to be included on it. The coins or the notes are not atlases.

first of all welcome to the forum :)

Unlike Cyprus, the geographical position of Malta on the coins is correct, only it isn't to scale. Malta could easily be placed in its right geographical position on the current banknotes’ map. They would only need to make bigger banknotes in case they would want to keep the sizes to scale.

As far as i know, on the current banknotes Iceland is located in the right geographical position.

I am more interested in the banknotes that are going to be issued in 2011.
Is the committee that vote on the new banknotes considering that Iceland might join the Euro.

I never knew that Greenland is part of North America Continent as it can sometimes be seen as part of Europe on some maps. Thanks, now I know.
According to my atlas Iceland is about 200km to the left of Ireland.

Question?
Is this a new part of The Euro Information Website?
