Poll: UK and the Euro... when?

Postby theeuro on 31 Jan 2009, 05:38

When do you think the United Kingdom will adopt the Euro?

The global economic crisis has recently renewed discussions about the United Kingdom joining the EMU. Is this just a knee-jerk reaction to the crisis, or will the discussions lead to adoption?

The soonest the UK could adopt the Euro is 2012, so that is the first date in the options. After four years, the choices become ranges of three years.

As always, please feel free to reply with a comment on why you chose a certain year.

In my opinion, althought they could adopt in three years, it will take more than five years to change people's mind about the pound in the UK. I think the government will never change if the people and polls does not support it (like in Sweden).

Having said that I think it will take 5 to 10 years to have a proper mind set in the UK. I have read polls and blogs about this topic on the web extensively; you can see comments like "I have no issues adopting the euro, just let us have a different note design, similar to the ones we have now, something that makes us different from the other countries in the EU" ... that can give you an idea of what is in people's mind, and the government needs to do an aggresive and extensive PR campaign to change that. But this is just my opinion as an outsider ...

Thanks,
Miguel
