For the first time since the introduction of the Euro, citizens across the European Union were invited to participate in an online vote to choose the design for the 2009 common commemorative honoring the Euro's 10 year anniversary as a currency.

Voting took place on the 'Euro Coin Design Contest' website:

The design was chosen by competition.

On the basis of a design competition between the Mints of the euro area followed by a pre-selection of designs by the Mint Directors, the winning design was chosen exclusively by EU citizens and residents by voting on the specific web site set up for this purpose.

The design that received the highest number of votes was selected as the winner.

Voting began on 31 January and closed on 22 February 2008.

The winning design was announced on 25 February 2008.

Final results of the online vote:

  1. First choice7.01% - 9931
  2. Second choice41.48% - 58766
  3. Third choice11.15% - 15784
  4. Forth choice7.71% - 10923
  5. Fifth choice32.67% - 46271

The text 'issuing country' that appears on the coin images will be replaced, on the actual coin, by the name (or an abbreviation of it) of each issuing country in its own language(s). Likewise, the abbreviation 'EMU' will appear differently per language.
