2010 Bundeslaender 2 Euro Comm. Design

Postby theeuro » 17 Jan 2009, 00:06

Nine members of a jury, chaired by the artist Carsten Theumer of Castle Giebichenstein, University for art and Design, have chosen the final designs which will be used for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Bundesländer series of German 2 Euro circulation commemorative coins. The final vote was taken on 11 December 2008.

For background on the Bundesländer series, please see The Euro Information Website: FAQ- What is the Bundesländer series?.

Some design changes separate these issues from the four previous (2006-2009). The previous issues contained the long form name of Germany, Bundesrepublik Deutschland, at the top of the outer circle, with the twelve stars of the European Union completing the ring in semi-circular fashion. These next three designs render the twelve stars in a complete circle and replace the local long form name of the country with an abbreviation letter of the local short form name of the country: D for Deutschland. These design changes are in accordance with The Commission of the European Communities Recommendation of 19 December 2008 on common guidelines for the national sides and the issuance of euro coins intended for circulation.

The theme of the German 2010 Bundesländer 2 Euro commemorative circulation issue is 'Bremen', the German state scheduled to hold the Presidency of the Bundesrat for that year and features the old town hall behind the statue 'Roland'. Both were recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 2004.

The designer is credited as Bodo Broschat, a German artist, who has also designed three German 10 Euro non-circulation commemorative coins.

Too sad that they will not continue in their original design... :(
I really do not like this coin.

I have three questions:

1. Where will the mint mark be located in the new design?
2. Where are the designs for 2011 and 20012? The text says that they were already chosen ...
3. Garmany applying a D as a country identification: shall we expect something similar in the normal coins soon? It sounds logical to me ... wouldn't this be confusing with "Denmark" if the adopt the euro?

Thanks,
Miguel

Interesting question... I'm not certain as of yet.

Don't they have patience in Japan!? ;)

Interesting question... I'm not certain as of yet about the normal coins. Denmark will probably have to use the local long form of its name, given the nature of the government and its status as a constitutional monarchy. 'D' is the accepted standard abbreviation for Germany. Denmark's standard abbreviation is 'DK'.

Of topic question: what will this local long form of Denmark's name will be?

Thanks,

Does anyone know why they have stopped to use their original design?

Wish they would continue, it's a lots nicer design than the new one.

Rick,

That has to be with the recent recommendations from the EC. The one that impacted German commemorative coins was that the stars in the out ring have to be represented as in the European flag, meaning, making a full circle in the outer ring. I presume they made the decision of removing the long name in order to win space. I personally like the new 2012 coin the most.

Thanks,
Miguel

Quite right, Miguel. As for the new design scheme versus the original design scheme (I am referring to the stars and the abbreviated name of the Member State), I'm not sure which one I prefer.

Sounds like an opinion poll is in order! I'll draw one up presently...

@Miguel

Thanks for the information! Didn't know that.

I also like the 2012 image the most, the one with Neuschwannstein. That's just such a wonderful castle!

Maybe it is possible to make a poll on which design (2006-2012) is the best?
