Ireland celebrates the International Polar Year

Postby Miguel.mateo » 04 Sep 2008, 10:27

TWO famous Irish Antarctic explorers, Ernest Shackleton and Tom Crean, are portrayed on new silver and gold commemorative coins issued by the Central Bank, to celebrate International Polar Year.

Their stricken vessel 'The Endurance' is also pictured on the silver €5 and gold €100 coins, trapped in the packed ice of Antarctica.

This is the first time the Central Bank has issued a half troy ounce (15.55 grams) gold coin denominated in euro.

The coins are available individually in sterling silver at a cost of €50 and fine gold at €395, or as a special two-coin set which costs €440.
