Macs & UNC-Chapel Hill's CCI
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's CCI (Carolina Computing
Initiative) only sells IBM's machines, but you may want to bring another
computer brand like Dell or Apple to college with you. While not officially
supported, you can survive and thrive with a Mac at UNC-CH.
You may be concerned about compatibility between a Mac and the University's
CCI policy. Fortunately, the applications you will need as a student,
such as Microsoft
Office, run on Macs and Windows computers (Wintels) alike and without
issue. By using an application like Office, all your work is compatible
with Mac and Windows computers that other students and faculty use. Of
course, you can also browse any web site, and you can exchange e-mail
with anyone, as these things are not platform dependant either.
