Programs for 2002
This will be the second year for this program committee.
2001 was a very successful year for programs, and 2002 looks even better.
Bob Gabor, Ed Karolak, and I continue, and we have added Rob Zaccardi,
Irene Joiner, Leon Harkins, and Jeff Leimberger for next year. We are
all set to make 2002 the best year yet.
You will see host names after
each event. They are responsible for all aspects of the events. They
act as hosts for guest speakers, accept reservations (with fees if any),
write newsletter articles, etc. Please contact them if you want more details
about their respective programs.
We are using the responses to the program
survey as a guide; however, we are always open to new ideas. If you have a
special interest or an idea for a program, please see me at the meeting or
give me a call (469-9575).
The programs listed below may have to be changed
if for some reason the speaker becomes unavailable. Keep posted to the
newsletter for updates and changes.

Tuesday, January 15 th meeting.
Carving Techniques and Tools.
Leon Harkins, a TWA member,is a gifted woodworker and carver. Leon teaches woodcarving at the NC State University Craft Center and at various places around the state as well as at home. He has produced many works of art in the practice of his craft.
Leon retired as Professor Emeritus of Forestry from NC State University where he spent a career of teaching. His love of carving dates back to when he was twelve. In 2001 Leon completed a commissioned project to carve an authentic sixteen and a half foot Northwestern America totem pole. He will share with us how he was able to make a totem pole that makes you feel as if you are in the Northwest.
Leon will also share with us his knowledge of the tools and techniques of the carving craft. He will cover tools and techniques used in chip carving, relief carving, and carving in the round. You should go away with a good understanding of the tools needed and some brands that you can trust to be good. You will also pick up some techniques, but if you are serious about carving, I suggest you talk to Leon about his classes. I have attended, and they are excellent.
Hosted by Fred Ford. Telephone 469-9575.

Tuesday, February 19 th meeting. The Surface Decoration of Furniture.
Michael Joerling is a professional furniture maker from Chapel Hill who has
operated his own studio near his home since 1984. He creates both commissioned
and gallery pieces that are exhibited and sold across the nation. Besides
creating beautiful objects in wood, Michael has taught woodworking classes
over the last several years and is currently making plans to teach out of his
studio.
Early in Michael s career, he drew inspiration from historical furniture
styles and architecture. In more recent times, the influence and inspiration
for his work has come more often from nature. This has led to much of his work
having a sculptural quality, perhaps to the point that function has receded to
yield a piece of sculpture.
Throughout his career, Michael has chosen to work with materials or techniques
that aesthetically add to the piece, whether in the choice of woods, veneers,
paints, or surface decoration. His presentation at the Feb. 19 th meeting will
focus on the surface decoration of furniture. He will talk about and
demonstrate how one can use paints, carving, distressing of wood, or a
combination of these and more to achieve surface appearances that are unique
and expressive of the form they adorn. I guarantee that you will take home
ideas that you will be tempted to try.
Hosted by Jeff Leimberger. Telephone 489-5195.
Saturday, February 23 rd workshop. Veneering Techniques and Tools.
Michael Joerling will host a workshop on veneering at his studio. He will
demonstrate and guide members through a veneer project using techniques that
can be used in most home shops. This is a hands-on workshop, everyone will
take home a panel that they have veneered during the day. He will also
demonstrate how you can use a vacuum press to achieve results that would be
difficult to accomplish with other techniques. In addition, Michael will
demonstrate the preparation and use of scrapers. If you haven t tried to use
this tool, or your trials have left you frustrated, Michael will teach you how
to use this incredibly simple and useful tool.
Hosted by Jeff Leimberger. Telephone 489-5195.
Tuesday, March 5 th field trip. Visit 3M Research Facility.
We have planned a road trip to the 3M Company just outside of High Point
(toward Liberty). This is one trip you won t want to miss, especially if you
haven t been before. This particular facility is used for research for product
development. They bring in groups for demonstrations of many of the 3M products
(really interesting!!) and many of the products developed as a result of their
research at this building are on display here.
We are scheduled to arrive at the 3M facility by 9:00AM, at which time we will
have a morning session, then lunch (provided by the 3M group) and a short
afternoon session. We will depart at 3:30 PM. Be sure to mark your calendars
for this trip&good fellowship with fellow TWA members, great demonstrations,
good food and in the past we have been given a generously filled goodie box
at the end of our visit.
Hosted by Irene Joiner , telephone 833-8113, and
Leon Harkins telephone 362-1406.
Tuesday, March 19 th meeting. Furniture Construction.
Ben Hobbs of Hobbs Furniture Classes in Hertford, NC, and well know woodworker and instructor will share with us his knowledge of the construction of furniture. Ben leads over twenty furniture construction classes a year at his school, and his students turn out a wide variety of projects to include traditional chairs, tables, chests and beds.
In his presentation Ben will include planning for the project all the way through actual construction and finishing. While Ben s school uses some modern power equipment, they also concentrate heavily on the use of traditional woodworking tools and equipment. This will be both an interesting as well as useful presentation as we start thinking about all those projects around the house that we need to start work on.
Hosted by Rob Zacardi. Telephone (910) 590-2340.
Tuesday, April 16 th meeting.
Curved Panel Furniture Construction.
Bob Gabor, a TWA member, is a gifted craftsman as well as an entertaining
speaker. Several years ago Bob moved into his free-standing twenty-five
foot by forty foot workshop, the envy of the entire club. Not only does he
have every tool imaginable, but he also has jigs to die for! We marvel at
the jig construction, saying, in honesty, If that were mine, I would put
it in my home as an object d art.
Bob has developed a keen sense of design by attending workshops conducted by
masters as well as making some real neat stuff. I would say at this time Bob
himself is a master. He is incorporating more and more curves to enhance his
design approach and will, at this meeting, demonstrate and describe various
methods used in curved panel furniture construction. One of his recent projects
was to construct a built-in desk and office center in his home. He will share
with you the design approach and the techniques he has learned and developed
to complete this and other projects. Please come and be entertained while you
learn.
Hosted by Fred Ford. Telephone 469-9575.
Saturday, April or May tour Shop Bot Field Trip.
Durham Donna K. Bell ( donna@shopbottools.com tel. 919-680- 4800) has offered to give TWA members a tour of the Shop Bot manufacturing facility. You can find out more about this CNC (Computer Numeric Controlled) device by logging on to

Lyle Wheeler, a gifted craftsman and entertaining speaker from Millers Creek, NC, will be with us to talk about and demonstrate this method of furniture making. Lyle has taught at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC for the past ten years. Many of you have probably seen him demonstrating his craft at the NC State Fair in the Village of Yesteryear. He will share with us some of the history of the designs that he builds as well as an explanation of the tools and techniques used including mortise and tenon construction using wet and dry joinery.
This will be an extended meeting & program starting at 6:30 with a barbecue sandwich supper and will be held outdoors in a pavilion at an area park. Don t miss it!
Hosted by Bob Gabor. Telephone 542-5951.

Friday, July 19th meeting. Avoiding Mistakes in the Workshop.
Lon Schleining began his career as a professional woodworker in Southern California in 1978 building staircases. To date he has built several hundred projects including many one-of-a-kind designs. A gifted teacher, he taught woodworking classes at Cerritos College for four years. In 1995 he began to write articles for Fine Woodworking and Fine Home Building magazines. He has more than 50 articles in print and was recently named Contributing Editor for Fine Woodworking. Starting in 1998 he began to travel with the Woodworking Shows, teaching seminars on a wide variety of subjects.
Woodworkers make mistakes. In a perfect world, perhaps we could eliminate them altogether, but as long as there are humans involved in the process, the best we can do is avoid as many as possible. Many mistakes could be avoided by simply planning a bit more carefully. The time spent working out a logical sequence of events is time gained if even one mistake is avoided. Careful drawing, using story poles, listing parts and their sizes, and avoiding math errors all contribute to efficient, safe and satisfying woodworking
Mistakes can rob the satisfaction and profit from any project. With a bit of planning, the most common woodworking mistakes are easily avoided. Lon will cover ways to avoid mistakes in design, measuring, layout and cutting. He'll cover topics like taking direct measurements, trimming to size, making story boards and using a tape measure as a calculator. See why Lon says "Measure Once; Cut Twice!"
Hosted by Bob Gabor. Telephone 919-542-5951. Email rjgwood@mindspring.com
Saturday, July 20th workshop.
Gluing and Clamping Strategies: Make your gluing faster, straight forward and more reliable. Lon Schleining is the author of a seven-page Fine Woodworking Magazine article, Gluing and Clamping Strategies (FWW #141). He ll show you how to prepare the parts, and choose the proper glue for different applications, and will share some rules of thumb he s learned the hard way. The workshop concentrates on real world techniques designed to work every time, exploring such issues as why less clamping pressure is usually better than more and why you would never want to use a wet rag to remove excess glue.
Lon will demonstrate clamping methods for boxes, drawers, tabletops, veneers, bent lamination, coopered panels, octagons, picture frames and more. This workshop with Lon is guaranteed to increase your confidence with this vital and often stressful woodworking challenge.
Hosted by Bob Gabor. Telephone 919-542-5951. Email rjgwood@mindspring.com
Sunday, July 21st workshop. Steam Bending and Bent Laminations.
Lon's new book, The Complete Manual of Bending, covers both of the methods of bending in depth, while his Fine Woodworking article and Taunton video on steam bending cover the basics. This workshop is designed to answer all of your bending questions. When would you steam bend and when would you choose lamination bending and why? What are the tradeoffs with each of the methods of bending?
Lon will demonstrate and have everyone work with steam bending and lamination bending. Everyone will get to do some steam bending, learn how to build a compression strap and see why bends work and why they don t. We ll bend some 90 degree parts and some 180 degree parts including a chair crest rail and a Windsor chair hoop. In the lamination bending session, everyone will get to mix some powdered glue, learn how to mill the laminates to the correct thickness, build a bending form and grow accustomed to working with the methods and materials used in lamination bending. Attend this workshop and go home ready to tackle one of those someday projects.
Hosted by Bob Gabor. Telephone 919-542-5951. Email rjgwood@mindspring.com
