Unless otherwise noted all meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month, 7:00 pm at the Klingspor Woodworking, 3141 Capital Boulevard, Raleigh.

Tuesday January 15 Making a Kaleidoscope
Speaker: Jim Duxbury
Jim Duxbury will demonstrate the construction of his Intermediate model wooden kaleidoscope. This kaleidoscope is a typical example of a traditional 3 mirror scope with an oil-filled object box and prismed exterior lens contained in an end cylinder which can be rotated. He will show the fabrication of his unique cone jig for turning the kaleidoscope barrel and end cylinder. This technique can also be used to turn numerous other off- center objects. Additionally, he will make all the pieces for the object box, cut glass for the eye- piece, and also cut the first surface mirror using his mirror-cutting jig. This kaleidoscope is Not a Kit everything is fabricated and assembled.

Tuesday February 19 Curved doors with a veneered surface
Speaker: Steve Bodner

Steve Bodner, who is retired and lives near Pittsboro, will describe how to build curved plywood doors with veneered surfaces, such as he used in this Federal-style sideboard. There are four methods of making doors with significant curvature. Coopering or laminating is used with solid doors; bricklaying or plywood is used as a base for veneered doors.

Tuesday March 18 Scroll Saw Techniques
Speaker: Gus Stefureac

Gus Stefureac, a long time Raleigh resident, will bring us a program on the scroll saw. Gus operated a wood working shop in Raleigh for many years. He was a fixture at the Village of Yesteryear at the NC State Fair for many years. His scroll sawed toys brought smiles to several generations. He has taught scroll sawing at many sites, including Highland Hardware in Atlanta. Many will recognize Gus, as the Apolo guy, as he represents them at the woodworking shows.

Friday April 18; Furniture re-finishing
Speaker: Alan Noel
Workshop Saturday & Sunday April 19 & 20

Friday night April 18th Alan Noel will present before TWA's regular meeting an over-view of furniture re-finishing and cover the highlights of the two-day course to be held over the weekend.

Alan Noel will be giving a two-day workshop on furniture re- finishing, starting Saturday April 19th and completing on the 20th. The course will take two pieces of restorable furniture through disassembly, repair, reassembly, and preparation for finishing and final finish with a French finish. Location of the workshop will be announced at a later date. Alan is the proprietor of Noel's Woodworks in Atlanta, Georgia and has been a professional furniture restorer for over 25 years. He has extensive experience in a wide range of finishing techniques. He writes regular columns for Finishing and Restoration magazine and for Highland Hardware in Atlanta's Wood News OnlineTM, he has taught courses at The Marc Adams School of Woodworking and has also written for Wood magazine. Alan has taught his skills throughout the Southeast and has served as a finishing consultant for various furniture manufacturers.

Saturday May 10th 5:00 PM at Apex Community Park, Skill Building Social

This meeting is an opportunity to eat, learn, practice skills, and socialize. Spouses and children are welcome. Talk over your attendance with your family. I will be asking for an idea of how many will attend the May Social at the April meeting. There is no sign up. I just need to know how much food to bring. The event will be held at Apex Community Park (Lake Pine. We will have hot dogs, fixings, drinks, and sank food. There will be no official agenda. I will be there and will show the steps to making a bow back Windsor chair. You will also have an opportunity to try your hand at shaping spindles on a horse (clamping device used by chair makers)

Bill Anderson has been asked to bring a few tuned hand plains. He can show you how to use one, and you can experience using a properly tuned hand plane under the guidance of a master. Everyone is asked to bring a finished project or a jig. There will be no demonstration or presentation. All items will be placed on a table with your name by the item. If there is interest, the interested person or persons will find you and ask questions. There may be more skill building if I can get some more help. HOST: Fred Ford

Tuesday June 17; Jigs
Workshop Saturday June 21
Speaker: Various Members

At the Tuesday evening program several TWA members will demonstrate their favorite jigs. Our host, Cecil Raynor, will be recruiting several members to show their favorite jugs. If you are interested in showing your jigs, see Cecil. For the workshop, members will lead the class in making several jigs. Each class participant will be able to complete several jigs for their own shop.

Tuesday July 15 Show `n Tell
Speaker: Various Members

This year's show and tell will feature some of our member's best works. We are asking members to share with the club how they went about design, building and finishing the project. Of particular interest are items that make good gifts. These could range from a simple clock to an elaborate jewelry box. Everyone is encouraged to bring one of his or her favorite projects whether you or someone else made it.

Tuesday August 19; Hand tool Sharpening.
Speaker: Bill Anderson
Workshop Saturday August 23

At the Tuesday night program Bill Anderson will demonstrate sharpening of chisels and plane blades using a combination of diamond and Japanese water stones. There will be a discussion of the sharpening techniques for other tools including spoke shaves, drawknives, and scrapers. Bill will show some of the more useful sharpening jigs and guides to aid in getting a sharp edge. You are encouraged to bring your dull tools and your questions for a group discussion on solving those difficult sharpening situations.

The Saturday Workshop will be a hands-on program. Participants are encouraged to bring tools that they want to sharpen including planer blades, chisels, scrapers, or any other woodworking tool requiring a sharp edge. The morning portion of the workshop will include instruction and demonstration on the basic techniques and principles of preparing a sharp edge on a tool. This will include flattening the back and determining an appropriate bevel. We will cover water stone, oilstone, diamond stone, and sandpaper sharpening. We will use a grinder to rough shape an edge and then explore the quickest and most efficient means to achieve a final edge. In the afternoon participants will work on their particular tools and to evaluate their results on some wood. Host: Brian Wagner

Tuesday September 16 Social/Toys For Tots Kickoff
Speaker: Jeff Mills

Our September program will be the kick off for out 2008 Toys for Tots campaign. Our woodworking speaker will be Jeff Mills, owner and operator of Mills Custom Sawing, whose business is located in Stoval NC. Jeff offers a wide variety of native woods, both in the green and kiln dried. He will speak on how he obtains logs, what varieties are desirable, and how he saws them for the best yield and for kiln drying. Additionally, we will have a show and tell of toys that the club will have made for donation. Of course, the Marines will be there to talk about the Toys for Tots program.

Saturday October 11 8:30AM-5:00PM Shop Crawl (visit workshops)

We will visit six workshops in the Jordan Lake ­Cary area. At 8:30 we will leave from a car pool parking area. Plan to arrive at 8:15 AM to allow time to divide up into car pools. The car pool parking will be next to the Bo Jangles Rout 64 in Apex. If you plan to have breakfast or coffee there please arrive in time before 8:15 AM to get what you want. The group will proceed to visit the workshops of Bob Gabor (his newly constructed workshop), Terry Tenhouse, Bob Nauman, Fred Ford, Al Basham, and one that is undetermined as of now. About noon we will stop for lunch at El Dorado Mexican Restaurant6442 Tryon Rd.Cary, NC 27518. Dutch treat. There are several other restaurants in the area if you do not care for Mexican. I am sure everyone will pick many ideas to bring back to their own workshops. Host Fred Ford

For the Tuesday evening program our resident woodworking guru Bruce Wren will discuss "Table Saw Tune-UP techniques" and will provide a preview of Saturday's workshop on Table Saw Tune-Up.

Saturday November 22 Table Saw Tune-Up Workshop

Bruce Wren will hold a Table Saw Tune-Up workshop and a discussion covering different types of saws, selecting proper blades, improving efficiency, jigs, push sticks, and centerboards. The table saw is a highly versatile, frequently underutilized tool and is the foundation tool of most people's shop. This will be an ideal time to ask any unanswered questions about the table saw and its use you may have. Host: Brian Wagner
Tuesday December 16 Toys For Tots

The December meeting will be Toys for Tots Show and Tell membership social. Everyone is encouraged bring a spouse or f We will provide coffee, soft drinks and dessert. There will be some to socialize, to conduct a brief business meeting, and have a sho tell featuring the Toys for Tots donations. Everyone is also encou to bring items they have made to show to the members and guests. Marine Corps will be there to receive the toys and to add a spot of co our meeting.
